Found May 26, 2009 on Where Is Andy Van Slyke:
OK, so the Pirates have made it through (approximately) one quarter of 2009 with a 19-22 record. This is a nice start towards evading the horrors of being the worst professional sports franchise in history. But now? Now interleague play starts. The Death Star to the Pirates' Alderaan. Nothing ruins a good old fashioned run at .500 like interleague play. We get most of the AL Central this year, which is the division that olbiterated us in 2006 while catapulting WHYGAVS towards minor internet fame. And yet, I don't feel all that worried. The White Sox are not very good. They got pasted 20-1 by the Twins yesterday. Jake Peavy wants nothing to do with them. Bring it, interleague play. Zach Duke and Gavin Floyd get the starts tonight while JR has chosen to sit Andy LaRoche for Ramon Vazquez. He says it's just to get him a night off, but it looks awfully suspicious in light of last night's pinch-hitting episode. Did LaRoche react to that as poorly as the fans did? Is there...

Comparing a MLB Team's Payroll and Attendance

The below chart shows a comparison between the Salary spent by each MLB teams and the percentage of attendance in their stadium. The higher you are on the chart the closer you are to the Yankees 200 million dollar payroll, the lower you are on the chart the closer you are to the Marlins 38 million dollar payroll. The further right the team is the closer they are to the Red Sox...

Down Goes Harden

Something tells me the Cubs ain’t living right. Big Z is back but now Harden heads to the DL. And the Cubs were shut down by Jake Peavy last night. Big Lou, from the Trib: “We get a starting pitcher and we lose one,” manager Lou Piniella said. “Hopefully it’ll just be a couple starts and [...]

Jake Peavy Rejects White Sox Trade

Padres pitcher Jake Peavy invoked his no-trade clause, rejecting the proposed trade to the White Sox. "As of right now, this is the best place for us to be. We made that decision for the time being," Peavy said before Thursday night's game against San Francisco.Peavy, who is 3-5 with a 3.82 ERA with 69 strike outs, will make his scheduled Friday start versus the Cubs. I wonder if...

Jake Peavy Shuts Down Punchless Cubs

Two days ago it looked like Jake Peavy was going to become a member of the Chicago White Sox, but the trade was vetoed by Peavy himself, and he remained a member of the San Diego Padres.  Friday night he took the mound against the other Chicago team, the offensively inept Cubs, and showed the [...]

Peavy, Bale, Moustakas, and a Link

First off I want to personally thank Jake Peavy for rejecting the trade to Chicago.  I like him even more now that he has given the White Sox the finger.  To Mitch Williams and any other paid media who went on record as saying that the Sox acquiring Peavy would not impact the AL Central, [...]

Jake Peavy Says No!

And after all the hoopla, rumors, and hysteria; Jake Peavy is still a San Diego Padre. The White Sox, led by GM Kenny Williams, made a strong push for the Padres ace, but they were unable to convince Peavy to come to Chicago. No surprise there: it's been well documented that Peavy wants to remain in the National League and is comfortable in San Diego and is hesitant to move.There...

Casual Friday: Greetings From Beautiful San Diego

The Yankees are all about the pinstripes, in every sense of the word. The rest of MLB is more casual. This is the latest post in a Friday series called Casual Friday, in which I take a quick look around the rest of Major League Baseball.* Padres pitcher Jake Peavy will be on the mound in tonight's only intra-league game, as Interleague Play 2009 begins. Peavy had been traded...

EV Peavy Japanesey...

Okay, let's talk Jake Peavy. It all depends on the package the Padres would accept. Because you know what? The Brewers have no pitching prospects. They have names on a list. And if you consider that the Brewers history with pitchers is a dark one? (Outside of Sheets and Gallardo? They have received little from pitching prospects.) If the package is something along the lines of Jeremy...

Rumor: Phillies discussing potential Peavy deal

Mike Francesa of 660-AM radio in New York claimed the Phillies are discussing a potential deal for San Diego’s Jake Peavy, who shot down a trade to the White Sox yesterday. Francesa didn't cite a source. Peavy will earn $11 million this season, $15 million in 2010, $16 million in 2011 and $17 million in 2012, and also has a $22 million club option for 2013. Mayberry update: In...

Peavy Rejects Trade to White Sox

MLB.com reports that San Diego Padres ace Jake Peavy exercised his no-trade clause and nixed a potential 4-for-1 trade today that would have sent the All-Star right-hander to the Chicago White Sox. Chicago's two top pitching prospects, Aaron Poreda and Clayton Richard, were reportedly to have been included in the deal. "Right now, this is the best place for me and my family," Peavy...

Cubs 6-1 Pirates: Okay, Okay, We’ll Take It

The Cubs ended their 8-game slide in defeating the Pirates in a game called on account of rain in the top of the 6th inning. Sometimes, this kind of thing is just what a team needs to get back on the right track, and tonight’s game had several promising signs. 1.) Return of patience at the plate: The Cubs drew 4 walks in 5 innings and had Snell at 98 pitches through 5 innings...

Holy pitching!

Last week a Chicago Sun-Times writer was on ESPN proclaiming that the acquisition of Jake Peavy would give the Chicago White Sox, far and away, the best pitching staff in the AL Central--an opinion shared by this guy--not just because of Peavy’s talents but because of how poor the pitching is in the division. Peavy is a very good pitcher. I have no desire to argue otherwise. I...

Padres Shopping Kouzmanoff

Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times says in a recent article that the Padres have expressed a willingness to move third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff. Kouzmanoff would fill the void left by Aramis Ramirez, who will be out for six to eight weeks after separating his shoulder. Kouzmanoff is hitting .236 with 4 home runs in 42 games this season, and is a .260 career hitter. Kouzmanoff...

A day game at Wrigley

The Pirates close up their longest road trip of the year at 2:20 this afternoon against the Cubs. With Zach Duke on the mound, they're hoping that they can win both this series and as a result, the road trip (they're currently 5-4, but a loss today means they lose both non-National-related series). Of course, to win today they'll have to overcome John Russell's obsession...
