I'm surprised to hear that the Mets might be in the market for a new catcher. Brian Schneider was a target of Omar Minya's, who was familiar with his work since he was his GM in Montreal. I remember last off-season the Mets were willing to give up offense at the catchers position for a defensive minded catcher who worked well with pitcher's. My understanding is that the pitching staff was happy with the way he called a game and after getting off to a rough start behind the plate he settle into having a fine defensive year. The 32 y/o catcher hit .257 with a .339 OBP his weak hitting became much more noticeable when the offense struggled and the bottom of the order became an automatic out. He is signed through 2009 at the very reasonable cost of 4.9 mm. If I was looking to move a catcher it would be Ramon Castro, he is just injured too often for me.....But there has been speculation that some in the organization weren't happy with Schneider and felt that the catcher s...

The Mets figure to carry 12 pitchers, so with a regular at each position, that leaves 5 reserve spots on the team. Backup catcher Ramon Castro and outfielder Endy Chavez are certain to make the team.
