You know it's one of those postseasons when the umps are getting ripped even for getting the calls correct. The good old neighborhood play. It's a given, 99 times out of 100, but last night Jerry Layne called Melky Cabrera safe when Erick Aybar's feet were merely in the vicinity of second base. To give FOX credit, they went back over the game's previous double plays and found there hadn't been any other neighborhood plays that game, so the umps were at least consistent. Also consistent: reactions from New York and L.A., taking sides: The New York Daily News: ...the Yankees nearly got a huge break in the 10th, as Aybar never touched second base on a potential double play... The New York Post: Shortstop Erick Aybar, who misplayed Hideki Matsui's popup in the 4-1 Game 1 loss, never touched second base on what should have been a Jorge Posada double-play ball in the 10th... Chad Piscaner at Large: Apparently Aybar and the Angels learned that the "neighbo...

Erick Aybar's Footwork Creates Giant Gray Area
It didn't end up being the most important play in the Yankees' classic 3-2 ALCS victory on Saturday night, but Erick Aybar's(notes) non-tag of second base in the 10th inning definitely ranks as its oddest and most controversial highlight. To recap: With Melky Cabrera(notes) bearing down on the base after a Jorge Posada(notes) grounder to second, the Angels shortstop straddled...
The Battle
Erick Aybar singles with two out in the bottom of the third. Andy Pettitte throws over to first a few dozen times, and then Aybar goes and steals second. Nice job by Erick, as Andy had gotten the shorststop to shorten his lead.
Unfortunately for the Angels, Figgins pops out to first to end [...]
Yankees, Angels tied at 2 through 6 in ALCS Game 2
Erick Aybar singled in a run, a suddenly shaky A.J. Burnett sent home another with his second wild pitch of the fifth and the Los Angeles Angels rallied for a 2-2 tie with the New York Yankees after six innings Saturday on another bitterly raw night in the AL championship series.
Humiliation: Yankees 4, Angels 3 (13 Innings)
I want to give the Angels the benefit of the doubt here, but when the game ends on errors like the Angels made in this one — perhaps mitigated somewhat by the awful playing conditions — it just looks awful for their chances to progress.
Bad umpiring almost all the way around, with an especially horrible call by second base umpire Jerry Layne that erased a double play...
Cabrera Reaches Again
Melky Cabrera singles leading off the bottom of the eighth, his first hit of the night but the third time he’s reached base. Not bad for the number nine hitter.
Update: Jeter advances him with a short ground ball to third. One down.
Another Error
Robinson Cano commits his second error of the ninth, allowing Erick Aybar to reach first leading off the 13th inning.
Update: The rain has let up. Figgins sacrifices to put Aybar at second with one out.
Update: The Yankees walk Abreu intentionally to put the force on.
The Day After: Cream pies, bad throws and a guy named A-Rod
As the ALCS heads west to Anaheim, we take a look at what the bards and bloggers are saying about Saturday's extra-inning classic in the Bronx, a 4-3 win for the Yankees over the Angels. Mike DiGiovanna, Los Angeles Times: Izturis fielded the ball cleanly, his momentum carrying him toward first, but instead of taking the sure out, he spun around and fired past shortstop Erick...
Angels' mistakes help Yankees heat up
A baseball fell in a small place between shortstop Erick Aybar and third baseman Chone Figgins, with two out in the first inning, in Game 1 of the American League Championship Series, on a night when the Yankees' CC Sabathia was as biting as the wind.
Santana in the Twelfth
Ervin Santana takes the mound for the Angels, likely for the long haul. Melky Cabrera leads off for the Yankees.
Update: Cabrera works the count to 3-2, but swings and misses to strike out. One down.
Update: Posada loops one into shallow right center, and Abreu can’t catch up to it. He singles to [...]
