Game One Hundred Sixty-One - Cubs 2 Diamondbacks 5 WP - Doug Davis (9-14) LP - Ryan Dempster (11-9) Save - Juan Gutierrez (9) Lou Piniella's crew finished the season with a loss to the Diamondbacks and completed the 2009 campaign with an 83-78 record in 161 games. Doug Davis dominated the Cubs' offense once again. The veteran southpaw's two best starts of the year came at the Cubs' expense. The Cubs managed only two runs on Sunday afternoon ... both off the bat of Sam Fuld. After 78 career games, Sam Fuld drove in his first big league run with the first Major League homer of his career. Fuld hit a 2-2 pitch from Davis into the bleachers in right in the fifth and broke up the shutout. Fuld then cut the D'Backs' lead to 5-2 with a ground out to first in the seventh that plated Reed Johnson. Reed Johnson, in possibly his final game as a Chicago Cub, finished the day 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Ryan Dempster reached his 200-inning mar...

Yes, You CAN Steal 1st Base!

Hak-Ju Lee used his blazing speed to beat-out a routine grounder to second with the game tied, bases-loaded, and two outs in the bottom of the 9th, giving the Cubs a hard-fought 5-4 victory over the Brewers in AZ Instructional League action at Fitch Park Field #3 this afternoon in Mesa. The Cubs entered the bottom of the 9th trailing the Brew Crew 4-3, thanks to a two...

2009 Cribbie Awards

Last day of the season (for teams that aren’t good enough to be in the playoffs).  Time to hand out some awards for accomplishment or lack thereof to deserving Cubs players. Ryne Sandberg MVP Award: Derrek Lee.  Easy call here.  He leads the team in batting average, homers, RBI, runs and all those dopey made-up Bill [...]

Time for the Stretch

Let me hear ya! A one ... a two ... a three ... The nearly nine-month journey that began in Mesa back in February has come to an end. There is no reason for me to rehash what went wrong for the 2009 Chicago Cubs ... you know what happened. You lived through every pitch of every inning just like I did. With that said, I truly believe that one person is not responsible for this past...

Cubs Fire Von Joshua

Milton Bradley hasn’t been the only scapegoat this season. Gerald Perry was fired earlier in the season and things never improved. His replacement has now been fired. Joshua was offered his old gig as hitting coach at Iowa. At least Derrek Lee understands. ‘‘I hate to say it, but hitting coach is overrated,’’ said Derrek Lee, the team’s top offensive performer...

Gamecast: October 3rd vs. Diamondbacks

Daniel Cabrera (0-5, 6.07 ERA) vs. Randy Wells (11-10, 3.18 ERA) Story Lines Randy Wells' rotation spot for next season is pretty secure, I would guess, but I'm sure he would like to end the year with a better than .500 record. The Cubs, by the looks of it, looked terrible yesterday. Thank goodness, I didn't see anything. Who's Hot The Twins - Don't look...

Cubs Rumors: Grabow, Harden

The Cubs have four players who are headed for free agency this winter: reliever John Grabow, outfielder Reed Johnson, reliever Kevin Gregg and starter Rich Harden.  Thanks to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, we already have news on two of them... John Grabow has begun "preliminary talks" with the Cubs about returning for the 2010 season.  He wants to come back, and has...

Cubs demote hitting coach Von Joshua

The disappointed Chicago Cubs wasted little time making a change, dropping hitting coach Von Joshua after Sunday's season finale while offering him a similar spot at Triple-A.

Bradley at top of Hendry's list

Hey, Chicago Cubs, you've just finished short of first place for the 113th time in franchise history! Where are you going next?

Notes: Tracy reflects on time in AZ

Chad Tracy was asked to reflect on his Diamondbacks career, and a moment from this weekend brought a smile to his face.

D'Backs Talk: Davis, Tracy, Eric Byrnes

Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes was forthcoming, talking to Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic today.  Highlights: Payroll will likely be higher than the season-ending mark of $73MM.  They have about $60MM committed for 2010, assuming Conor Jackson is retained.  GM Josh Byrnes may have $15MM+ to spend. Byrnes has until the December 12th non-tender deadline to...
