Jason Kubel Homers for Third Straight Game

Twins Prospect Jason Kubel is starting to take advantage of regular playing time in the Minnesota lineup. He hit his fifth HR of the season in the second inning of tonight's game against Tim Wakefield and the Boston Red Sox. The dinger extends his hit streak to 8 games (12-34 in that span, .353 AVG).

Having been compared to Brian Giles, Kubel was set to make a splash in 2005, but tore up his left knee in the Arizona Fall League the winter before. A year and change later, he's healthy and very close to entrenching himself in the Minnesota lineup for years to come. He doesn't strikeout much and hits for a nice combination of power and AVG. He's a great pickup in deep mixed or keeper leagues. His minor league career AVG of .323 and K/BB ratio of 1.08 (184/171) suggests he's one of the better bets amongst rookies to have success over the rest of the season.

I knew this would happen!.. I drafted Kubel but then had to drop him because I had a roster crunch and he was in the minors. Awesome talent.

That's funny. I saw Kubel dropped in a few leagues all at the same time. Not only are owners going to miss his second half production, but they served up a great free agent keeper to the person in their league who snatched him up cheaply.

My choice was between Kubel and Dan Johnson. It was going to be Johnson until the last second and then I changed my mind, reasoning that Johnson was still in the majors and Kubel wasn't. I've been able to enjoy Johnson's resurgence but I wonder if I'm going to regret making that choice down the road. I think Kubel's long term potential is greater than Johnson's.

Agreed. Long term I'd rather have Kubel. He had even shown a little speed before his knee injury that hopefully will return in the form of 5-10 stolen bases a year which is an added plus. It's funny you mention Johnson, I picked him up in the same league I grabbed Kubel...both for $1.

I'm not in a keeper league, but even I picked up Kubel because of his anticipated 2nd half numbers. This is the kind of article I look for in sites like these. Thanks.

Thanks mmf! As you can tell, Cushing and I like discussing the fantasy implications of rookie prospects. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on other young players as they come up.
