As I said yesterday and in my award picks I did not think Morneau deserved the MVP and I thought Derek Jeter did. Well listening to the major culprit Joe Cowley, of the Chicago Sun Times, the man who voted Jeter 6th, speaking on the radio it is blatantly obvious that this man is an idiot and does not deserve a vote. First I can see how you can look at the statistics and see all of Morneau's RBIs and HRs and average for a team that did not have overpowering offense statistics and vote him first I have no problem with that. I think they're wrong but I'm not gonna call a guy a complete idiot for voting Morneau first. Cowley however is an idiot for several reasons...

  • I don't know if he's an idiot. He probably just hates Derek Jeter, something a lot of people probably feel. He's actually one of the better beat writers I've come across as he covered the White Sox this season for the Sun-Times.
  • Eh, he voted for AJ including the logic of he was part of the deal which brought the Twins Nathan, Bonser and Liriano.
    He didn't vote for Mauer.
    He voted for Arod.

All three things are pretty stupid.
  • Until MLB gives guidelines on the voting to the voters, they should all be allowed to vote however they want. If he want's to put AJ on there cuz they're friends, let em.
  • let him vote for who he wants to. what was so amazing about jeters year. morneau had a great bating average for a slugger and jeters ba was only a little bit bigger. its just the new york hype machimes that get you believing jeter was an mvp candidate. jeters numbers weren't spectatular. if you look at the stats without knowing who's stats are better without looking at the name of the player, morneau is a better choice. don't let the news articles on espn fool you. all they talk about is the yankees and red sox. the yanks dd Nothing against the tigers, and talk about the red sox, who didn't even make the playoffs and occasionally the white sox because of ozzie acting like a dumbass. think for yourself!
  • And the Twins were just as spectacular in the playoffs right? I they do anything but look at the HR and RBI stats. Apparently those are the only two that are valid in baseball. How about batting average with RISP and average with RISP and two outs? Those are the most important statistics in baseball. Jeter was .380 and .370 in those categories.

And the complaint wasn't that he voted Morneau first, it was how stupid the rest of his ballot was. He put Arod on the ballot. Who was top 2 in AL third baseman in errors, GIDP, and Ks. Those are super stats, MVP worthy.
  • All of these awards are flawed. Jeter had a much better case for the MVP this year than he did the gold glove, yet he won the latter, which in all honesty, he didn't deserve.

I think if you have a vote, you should be allowed to use it however you see fit. However, all votes should be made public so that those with them are held accountable. I don't mind that Cowley used his vote on Pierzynski. I'm just glad he's getting heat for his stupidity.

What a shock, Morneau is MVP

Justin Morneau is the best in the league, according to the press. My boy Curtisology was the first to predict it.

Justin Morneau Not Even the MVP of the Twins

When looking at the Twins team statistics its easy to see how Justin Morneau stood out above the rest. Great power numbers great average. But take a deep look at the Twins roster, his spot in the batting order and the importance of other plays in Minnesota and he is the third most important player on that team. http://simononsports.blogspot.com/2006/11/justin-morneau-not-even...

Justin Morneau: A Good Judgment Call

Most Valuable Players for single events or short series are sometimes obvious. Over the course of an entire season, there are more likely to be several great candidates to choose from. This year some of the baseball players under consideration were the New York Yankees’ shortstop, Derek Jeter, and David Ortiz, DH for the Boston Red Sox. When the votes were counted, those outstanding...

Jeter Tries Harder

Isn’t that what they say about being Number Two? Hey, Yankee fans are rightfully proud of our shortstop, Derek Jeter, even if the Minnesota Twins’ Justin Morneau got enough votes to beat him out for this year’s American League MVP. It wasn’t the closest vote ever, but at 320 to 306, it was closer than last year, when our Alex Rodriguez nudged out the Boston Red Sox’ David...
