Jonathan Papelbon Is A Coward

Sox up 3. Bottom of the 9th. 2 outs. 0-2 count. Runner on 2nd. Jonathan Papelbon throws up and in at Derek Jeter, sending him sprawling to the ground.

One word comes to mind: coward.

Well, other words come to mind, but I'll leave them up to your imagination. Feel free to add your own.

I watched the game and I'm a Yankee fan. That pitch was not that close to Jeter. This will start no such war.

You know in Papelbon's head that when he's got a 3-run lead, 2 outs and an 0-2 count on the batter, he thinks the game is over, because 99.9% of the time it is. I think it was cowardly based on the game situation. It's pretty much over so I'll knock Jeter off his feet.

I also don't think it'll start a war. We might see something but I doubt it. I also haven't heard/read any uproar over it, like we did last year when Joba threw behind Youkilis' head. Wonder if we would have had the game been on ESPN?? Credit to Jeter for just getting up, dusting himself off, and getting back in the box.

agreed, this crap happens at all points in the game and just look at the history, could start a war in this most INTENSE rivalry in sports peeps!...Both teams cannot afford that, i.e. suspensions, as they chase Tampa...trust me, I like clean played games with these two clubs, Like I said, Paps can get "child-like and tough Frat-guyish" sometimes, but I love him as Sox Closer...Like Joba too, great talent, and we'll see if this escalates(which I think it will), as if it does, it will be tomorrow night for round two, Joba at Manny or Youk...hope not, just want these 3 teams just to say "hey, we all have pennant shot, let's just let talent decide, enough of this macho crap"...funny you guys, this good thread was the first thing I thought of when I got up...ha

I agree with you on the suspensions when you're chasing and not being chased. And Papelbon is definitely one of the best in the game. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't want him on my team. And I could see the other perspective also. It just seems like the perfect time to throw a brushback. He still had him 1-2 and was still in control. Just seemed to me to be at the most opportune time which is why I thought it to be a bit cowardly.

And I hear ya, can see all perspectives on this incident...I would be red-faced sure, If NY was my team and not on the other side of it...all of us know Jeter is a class act, so that was no surprise, his casualness...hope all NYY and BOS fans had good 4th

Papelbon knows the games not over until the final out. If he's in the game then it's a save situation and the lead is not that big. Arizona scored six runs in the ninth the night before to come back. This is just a pitcher moving a batter off the plate. It's a terrible year for the Yankees and it shows up with their fans on this site also. Nice job Paps. Wait till next year Yankees. Lol.

It just seems way to coincidental that it happened with 2 outs, 2 strikes, the tying run on deck and the face of the Yankees at the plate. Had he hit Jeter and put the tying run at the plate, I'd be singing a different tune. He's still in control with a 1-2 count just as he is with an 0-2 count. Papelbon is one of the most cocky guys out there and you know he still thought eh ahd the game in hand.

i hate all the red sox, they hate the yankees, but they pretty much are the new yankees now, so everybody hates them

c'mon dude, that is so untrue...26 titles!...enough said...I would be more concerned about Tampa as most Sox fans and myself are up here if I was a NYY fan, like a good friend of mine-he's so Tampa fixated, as they are showing his Yankees and Sox they are for real

Is papelbon the first pitcher to throw up and in on somebody??

Its a rivalry...period..leave it alone..

No, but he may be one of the few to do it to a team's captain, or face of the ballclub, when the game is 1 pitch from being over. It's almost the same as when Joba buzzed Youk last year, though Joba threw up and in (and over the head) twice. There was a huge stink about it, but you're not hearing that this year.

top of nine, bases loaded, one out...I don't know what will happen, but eerily similar to this article...Rivera is not a coward however, and the possible war started by Paps last night post by me, sorry I was one day late in that prognostication...Joba? can't wait for his head-hunting as brawl could ensue...but yeah, icecold33, you summed it up efficiently

congrats on the 2-1 win and the six hit batsmen...sox fans, no matter what, it's early July and we have at least a split here for this series...just the absolute killer sports rivalry...this thread could have renewed heat tonight as game 3 was so this article

ah, calm now, no brawl needed or suspensions for both of these contending teams...this pivalry gets me fired up more than anything, and no matter who your for, it's just so great as it stirs many emotions...I'm like, what else is there to do tonight after that classic!

Exactly.

no, understand where your coming from, but a coward wouldn't start the rest of the season war that Paps started tonight...and he did it with the game on the line...he's dumb sometimes, but not a coward

What are you talking about? Pape is not a coward! He is the farthest thing from it! Ok then if you think Pape is a coward what about Rivera? The Yanks were up 2-0 yesterday in the 9th and Rivera hit 2 people. That must mean Rivera is a coward. This is why people don't say sh*t about other people!

If Rivera hit or threw at someon with 2 outs, and 2 strikes and the tying run on deck, I'd agree with you. There's a huge difference. Papelbon didn't hit Jeter. The count went to 1-2, still well in his favor, with the tying run on deck. Mo put the tying run on base with the 1st HBP, and then moved him to 3rd with the 2nd HBP. It's not even remotely close to the same game situation.

guess NYY got revenge against Paps...good series, tough blown save, Boston will take it-nothing gained or lost in standings...caveat BOS Fans: We got to Joba, and were in all 4 games, won 2 there in the Bronx...can't wait until Fenway, and Paps redemption...so similar to game 3, the only difference being Rivera stopped the blown save just in time...good gompetitive series you guys...no cowards on either team remember, and dang: Both teams fans cnnot dwell on this as Tampa last I knew, is running away a little!! peace, and really enjoyed that series
