More often than not, MLB teams do what they are required to: pay the minimum to their young stars, knowing that it won't be long before hefty arbitration mandated raises and looming free agency effectively negate any potential bargains. The Red Sox reached an agreement with 18 players today. Jonathan Papelbon got his wish and a raise while 5 other players that saw playing time in Boston last season also got a pay hike.

The New York Mets and starting pitcher John Maine have started to talk contract extension. Last season, Maine won 15 games but because of his lack of experience in the majors the Mets were able to just assign him a contract.
