Ken Griffey Jr. : No. 1 Mariner of All-Time
For 30 days, Baseball Tonight will reveal the top three all-time players for each franchise, voted by the fans. Participate by voting here. The All-Time Franchise players from the Mariners will be chosen on Tuesday, August 19th. Over the next couple weeks, I am going to countdown my own ranking of the ten players on the ballot.
Tonight, the guys from Baseball Tonight will air who they believe are the top 3 Franchise players from Seattle. Tune in at 7pm on ESPN. Previous: No. 10: Mark Langston No. 9: Bret Boone No.8: Jay Buhner No.7: Alvin Davis No.6: Jamie Moyer No. 5: Alex Rodriguez No. 4: Randy Johnson No. 3: Edgar Martinez No: 2 Ichiro Number One Ken Griffey Jr. , CF 1989-1999 Choosing the number one Mariner of all-time wasn't that hard at all. I'm not going to run through his statistics or what he meant to Seattle. We've all seen and heard it. I think watching the video was the best way to present his importance to not only the Seattle Mariners but to the city of Seattle. Few figures in Seattle have garnered iconic status outside of the playing field. For example, Gary Payton, Don James, etc. Ken Griffey Jr. trumps all of them. Forever will his name be synonymous with baseball in Seattle. How about him returning? Honestly, I don't think it's going to happen. But if it does, well..cool. But let's try not to make a big fuss about it. We should be happy enough that Griffey let us watch the best player of the decade. We should be happy enough that Griffey let us reach the playoffs for the first time ever. We should be happy enough that Griffey built Safeco Field. We should be happy enough that Griffey saved baseball in Seattle. Let this post be a conversation starter on all things Griffey. What impact has Griffey had on your life? Do want him to return? Could Griffey be considered the best player ever if he didn't get injured?
