As noted here and everywhere else yesterday, Lou Piniella has decided to give Carlos Zambrano the Opening Day assignment at Houston. It will be the fifth time Zambrano has had the honor; the Cubs have gone 2-2 in Z's previous Opening Day outings. Fergie Jenkins started seven openers for the Cubs, while Rick Sutcliffe started five, and Rick Reuschel, four. The real fun in looking over this list at Baseball-Reference.com is noting which Cub pitchers got to go in Game #1 once, but never again. Here are the last ten such Cub pitchers:   Year Pitcher Opponent Final Score  1999     Steve Trachsel  Houston  4-2 (L)  1998  Kevin Tapani  Florida 11-6 (L)  1997 Terry Mulholland     Florida  4-2 (L)  1996 Jamie Navarro  San Diego  5-4 (W)  1995 Jim Bullinger  Cin...

My Yardbarker Debut

Hey Yardbarkers, It feels good to finally have this blog up and running. I would have started a few days ago, but I haven't been able to get to my computer. I just bought a house in Arizona, where I'm at now, and there was a flood in the room where I usually keep the computer. They had to knock down two walls and replace the carpet in the downstairs rooms of my new house...

It is a few weeks into Spring Training and the position battles on the Cubs are moving along.? I covered the hitters yesterday, and today we will look at the pitchers.? There are some health issues of concern, as well as some battles for spots in the middle of the bullpen.? Here?s your ...

Zambrano to start Opening Day

Thanks to Suburban Kid for the heads up that the Cubs had decided that Carlos Zambrano would be their Opening Day starter. Carrie Muskat chimes in here (thanks for the link, Vlad). My favorite thing about that is the first comment: We all know that Rich Hill should be the opening day starter. In his absense, though, it should be Dempster. He was our bestest pitcher last year....

Zambrano bumped up. Marquis to be bumped out?

There will be a full series preview from Kurt later on and Byron has already exchanged pleasantries with the enemy, but I thought I'd just like to inform you (and express my giddiness) that Carlos Zambrano is getting the start tonight in Game 1...

Carlos Lee (OF-HOU)

Carlos Lee hit a career milestone when he homered off of Greg Maddux; 1,500 career hits.

A Look Back at 2007 - The Month

The Cubs stumbled into June 7 games under .500 and 6 1/2 games back of the Milwaukee Brewers. Lou Piniella had to figure out a way to turn around the season. The Cubs frustration hit the boiling point on the first game of June against the Atlanta Braves. Carlos Zambrano and Michael Barrett slugged it...

Monday Morning Headlines/Open Thread

Derrek Lee has more home runs in the first week this year than he did the entire 2007 season. Big Z goes bananas I should write headlines for some paper (or maybe the AP). From the Trib: Carlos Zambrano wasn't going to let a lack of potassium cramp his style, nor his sense of humor. "A lot of water...

The Tao of Fred McGriff - Day 9

This afternoon I sat by the side of the road, waiting for the crosstown bus. I sat there for what seemed like forever, but was probably no longer than 20 minutes. I finally got so impatient that I crouched next to the bus stop sign, counting the seconds between a car appearing around the bend and it passing me. I also got to thinking... If I can't hardly wait 20 minutes for the bus...

A Little Love for Kelly Holcomb?

I know that he?s not John Lynch or Greg Maddux, but I have one specific memory of Holcomb. I?ll let Rotoworld Former Browns QB Kelly Holcomb has officially retired from the The journeyman may be best remembered for the frenzied 2003 Wild Card game where he shredded the Steelers ...

Lusterless Dodgers Drop Another to Braves

Jeff Bennett and Chuck James shut the Dodgers down for the second day in succession. Although those names don't resonate like Greg Maddux and Tom Glavin, the results are the same. The young two pitchers, pressed into service because of injuries to the Braves staff, limited the Dodgers to a single run...

Derek Lowe Is Emo, Dodgers Still Blow

There are streaks where your team can't score runs just because they are unlucky, and then there are streaks where your team can't score runs because they have "Dodgers" imprinted across the chest of their jerseys. The Dodgers continued their "excellence" with runners in scoring position, but they still managed to score a run. How, you ask? A home run...

Five losses in a row for the Giants and Padres

If you live outside of California, you may know that the Giants and Padres are duking it out for last place in the NL West, but what you probably don't know is that both teams have lost their last 5 consecutive games. San Francisco is 9 games behind the Dbacks and San Diego is 11 games back — and neither team has been able to stop their skid. The Giants have actually had some...
