Lee traded to the Rangers

It begins.

ESPN is reporting Carlos Lee was traded to the Texas Rangers, along with minor league outfielder Nelson Cruz, in exchange for Laynce Nix, Kevin Mench, and Francisco Cordero.

From a baseball perspective this seems like a lousy deal for the Bewers. Nix has never realized his potential - in fact the Baseball Crank identified him as someone whose stock seriously has plummetted this season (http://baseballcrank.com/archives2/2006/07/baseball_going_2.php). Mench finally found a shoe that fits and went on a hot streak earlier this season, but has since cooled off drastically, hitting only two homers since early May. Cordero could give the Brewers a much-needed boost as he probably steps in to be the closer. He's been awful lately, but he can't do much worse than Turnbow or Kolb.

But the Brewers gave up the two best players in the deal. Lee is a monster, and Cruz is one of the top prospects in the Brewers system. Besides, when you're making what amounts to a dump trade, why would you deal AWAY the best prospect involved in the trade? Then again, from the Rangers perspective, is adding another bat really what they needed to grab the division title? Strange trade on both ends.

From a fantasy perspective, as I mentioned above Cordero will be slotted into the closers role. This means you might be able to nab him if he's been dumped. Lee is also going to one of the best hitting parks in the big leagues and into the middle of a better lineup, so his numbers might go up even more.

Un-friggin believable!

Carlos Lee owners really couldn't have asked for anythign better. The lineup and ballpark are ideal for Lee to have a monster end to the season.

I'm not so sure this wasn't a good deal for the Brewers. It's probably better for the Rangers, but not bad for the Brewers. Cordero has been much better than people think over the last few months. He had a May ERA of 2.51, June ERA of 2.08 and would have had a similar ERA for July if not for a 4-run outing against the yankees on Sunday. Lee definitely wasn't re-signing with the Brewers and I don't think the Rangers will resign him either before he tests free agency. Mench is a quality starter and both are signed for next year at less money than Carlos Lee would make which allows them to be active in the free agent market this offseason. I'm not sure they needed to give up Cruz, but they get guys that help them this year and next and although Nix isn't the prospect he was a few years ago, he could still be a decent player for the Brewers.

This will help Teixiera in the power department. With Lee, he'll have more protection in the lineup and won't be the only guy capable of hitting a HR every time he's up to bat. I think much of Tex's struggles this year stem from this being a much weaker lineup, power-wise, than it has been in a long time. He hasn't gotten the same pitches to hit this year.

The bottom line is that Texas really gave up nothing for a rental player...They didn't give up one starter.
