So last night didn't go exactly according to plan, with Cole Hamels and the Phillies losing to the Mets, 4-2, on a rain-soaked night. Cole wasn't on early, and even if he had been, the run support didn't come around anyway. Just one of those nights, and aside from the lingering concerns around Hamels, there's nothing to read into the series opener.

But what kind of night will we see in Game 2? JA Happ faces Tim Redding, our old friend from the Nationals. I'll be honest here—I didn't expect Happ's hot streak to last anywhere near this long. Three or four solid-to-great starts? Sure, that happens for a talented young arm with a limited book. But I'm perfectly OK with being wrong about Happ, who has made 16 starts this season, winning nine and losing just two. His ERA (2.66) and WHIP (1.16) are the best marks among Phillies starters, including Cliff Lee if you include his AL service time this season.

Road Happ

With playoff baseball already prevalent in the minds of Phillies fans, many are sketching out the four man rotation and trying to figure what order Happ, Hamels, and Joe Blanton will fall into, presuming that the new ace Lee will take the ball in the first game of any playoff series. There's still plenty of baseball left to determine all that, and a heavy factor in the decision will likely be that Charle Manuel is a loyal, players' manager. If he's stayed with Brad Lidge through tough times in 2009, would he do any different for Hamels, his 2008 ace and World Series MVP?

But tonight is about Happ and is bout with Redding, whose been getting rocked so far in a Mets uniform. Happ will have the full arsenal in the lineup behind him tonight, which should be more productive than they were in the opener. Right?

Redding to start in place of Livan

Fresh off his three run relief outing, Tim Redding will take Livan Hernandez's place in the rotation. I completed this post today about the alternatives for the rotation, to be honest I'd rather see Redding released and a guy like Pat Misch get a chance. In other pitching news Oliver Perez had his side session and deemed himself fine for his next start, so really Livan'...

Mets waste great outing from Redding, Happ and Utley too much as Phillies win,4-1

Phillies rookie LH SP J.A. Happ continued his strong season while the Mets could not support a great spot-start from veteran RH Tim Redding with the bullpen allowing late runs, helping Philadelphia to a win 4-1 Saturday night at Citi-Field. Redding(1-4,6.10) allowed only 1 hit over 5 innings and  clearly deserved a better fate. He [...]

Preview Game 119: Phillies @ Mets

Old rivals will be reacquainted this weekend when the Phillies open up a four game series against the Mets up in New York tonight. In the past couple season a four game set like this would be the highlight of the National League but with the Mets struggling due to a rash of injuries this season the prestige of this four game set has tapered off. That does not mean there are not some...

Cole Hamels Boycotts Sportswriters, Fans Don’t Care

The question becomes - what if the team, en masse, began to shun sportswriters? Would readers feel the same way? Or, what if other elite players began doing the same thing? [Inquirer]

Tim Redding owns the Phillies

Tim Redding is a very bad pitcher and the only reason he’s still starting in the major leagues is that the Mets just cut Livan Hernandez and they’ve gotta throw somebody out there every five days. But Redding, despite his general craptitude, absolutely kills the Phillies. His career record against the Phillies is 5-3, and if that [...]
