MLB could not ask for a better matchup between two of the most storied franchises in baseball history. The Chicago Cubs come into the postseason with the best balance of starting pitching, offense, defense and bullpen of all playoff teams. However, they carry the biggest weight on their shoulders in not having won a World Series in 100 years. This pressure in addition to facing a very solid Los Angeles Dodgers team, will make advancing to the NLCS that much more difficult. However, the Cubs simply have too much depth. Specifically, their starting pitching will allow them to separate themselves from the Dodgers and advance to the NLCS. Pitching Matchups (First 3 games listed): Derek Lowe vs Ryan Dempster Chad Billingsley vs Carlos Zambrano Rich Harden vs Hiroki Kuroda Season Series: Cubs won 5 of 7 games Prediction: Cubs in 4 games

Has The Bidding for Teixeira Already Begun?

Well, it looks like Steinbrenner II -- Hank Steinbrenner -- has once again opened up his mouth and announced the Yankees grand plan to get back into the playoffs. Aside from the obvious targets for their desire -- A.J. Burnett, C.C. Sabathia, and Derek Lowe -- they want one other big name ticket item for their trophy case. Mark Teixiera. Needless to say, there's no doubt that...

Dodgers Roll Over Padres

Rafael Furcal's return to the Dodger lineup was a good night as Los Angeles (7-3) beat the Padres (6-4) 9-1.Derek Lowe (2-1) was the story of the night, however, as he went eight innings deep, giving up just one run. The right hander looked solid most of the night, only getting himself into one tough...

Let the Games Begin!!

Finally, after being snowed in all winter, Cubs fans finally get to hear Ron and Pat coming out of their radios. It's time for the first spring training game of the season. Ryan Dempster is looking to prove he belongs...

Ned Gets His Man, Signs Hiroki Kuroda

The Dodgers signed a three-year agreement with Japanese free-agent right-hander Hiroki Kuroda. He will join a rotation that features Brad Penny, Derek Lowe and Chad Billingsley. The fifth starter will come from a group of candidates that includes Jason Schmidt and Esteban Loaiza.

On Ron Darling's "Mockery" Comment About Manny

So a few people wrote in about a moment from last night's Dodgers-Cubs game and I wanted to explore it a little bit today. Manny Ramirez had just hit a solo shot to centerfield off of Carlos Zambrano, and when going through the highlights, Ron Darling noticed a little smile that Manny flashed right before the pitch. Forget for a second the awesomeness of smiling at a pitcher...

Odds and Ends: Harden, Bonds, Ramon Hernandez

Time to round up today's linkage. Susan Slusser believes Rich Harden and Joe Blanton will both be traded this season. She sees the Yankees and Mets as suitors for Harden, though he's already having a start pushed back. Jim Caple recently made his case for the Mariners to sign Barry Bonds; his l...

Mets Rumors: Starting Pitching Front

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, It seems that the Mets are having problems trying to figure out where there next starting pitcher is coming from. The Mets like Oliver Perez, but the Mets and Boras price tag seem to put them miles apart. The Dodgers, Reds, Brewers, and Mariners remain possible suitors to land the lefty starter. Derek Lowe still seems to be on the Mets radar...

Dodgers pitchers....

Derek Lowe and Brad Penny made a formidable 1-2 punch for the Dodgers and next season neither maybe with the team. It's believed that Penny's option won't be picked up and things seemed to have ended bad in Los Angeles. Penny struggled with shoulder problems this year and went 6-9 with an ERA of 6.27 in 17 starts. I know Penny struggled at Shea and I'd be concerned...

Dirtlocker points for: Derek Lowe, Mike Lowell It's not often that Red Sox 3B Mike Lowell is mistaken for Dodgers P Derek Lowe- but apparently, it can happen.- Check out the post & scoring at Dirtlocker.com- Full post and images at Yardbarker

The End of the Pedro Era

With multiple sources confirming that the Mets and pitcher Tim Redding have agreed to a one-year deal, it would seem that there is no room left at the inn for Pedro Martinez -- assuming the Mets will sign Derek Lowe or Ollie Perez to be their fourth I know there are a lot of folks that ...

Pelfrey Looks Strong

Sorry for being a little sporadic on the posting this week. I'm buried in work. I had a chance after dinner tonight to sit down in front of the TV and spend some quality time with this afternoon's game that I had DVR'ed. I was particularly interested in a chance to watch Mike Pelfrey pitch some substantial innings, as he is undoubtedly one of the keys to the 2009 season...

Cubs Play Poorly, Lose Game 1; It's Now All on Zambrano

It's not so much that the Cubs lost last night that worries me. It's the way that they lost that's going to lead to a very nerve-racking day for me.Obviously, Ryan Dempster's performance was not up to par last night. 4.2 IP, SEVEN BBs!, 4 ER, 7.71 ERA. But it's the offense that worries me even more. Apart from a cheap, wind-blown HR by Mark DeRosa (can we just...
