The 23-year-old 6'5" catcher will make his major league debut this Friday against the Detroit Tigers, as announced by team president Andy MacPhail this evening. It's not like he's going to single-handedly drag the Orioles out of the basement of the AL East, but it'll be fun to watch him hit.

Wieters, the O's top prospect, played three years at Georgia Tech before Baltimore used their fifth overall pick on him in the 2007 amateur draft. He then split time between the Class-A Frederick Keys and the AA Bowie Baysox in 2008, where he hit a combined .355 with 27 homers and 91 RBI. He was so awesome, that he was rewarded with the Brooks Robinson Award. Up until Monday, he was batting .285 with a .367 on-base percentage, five longballs and 26 RBIs for the AAA Norfolk Tides.

So what will happen to Gregg Zaun? Pretty sure he can go suck on the bench. Wieters is totally going to kick his ass. Numbers!

Welcome to the big leagues, buddy.

Matt Wieters to Debut on Friday

I was just watching the MASN broadcast of O’s-Jays, and Andy MacPhail was in the booth with Buck Martinez and Gary Thorne in the bottom of the 2nd inning. As Nolan Reimold grounded into a fielder’s choice, MacPhail made the announcement that O’s fans have been waiting for all Spring.

Harbaugh on Wieters

Ravens coach John Harbaugh will be among those who will be watching Matt Wieters' first major league game. Wieters, the Orioles' high-profile first-round pick, will be making his debut for the Orioles on Friday at Camden Yards. "I'm jacked about him," Harbaugh said Wednesday. Harbaugh will be attending Orioles games on Friday and Sunday.

Aubrey Huff Q&A, ESPN Zone: Write-up and Pictures

Yesterday afternoon, the ESPN Zone at the Inner Harbor in conjunction with the Baltimore Orioles held their second Q&A Session with first baseman Aubrey Huff. I've been going to these events for years, and I'll say the crowd at the popular restaurant was the biggest I've seen in long time -- save for Nick Markakis and Erik Bedard years back -- as every seat was practically...

Orioles Start the Series Off Right...Countdown 61

The Orioles have now won the first two games in their series against Toronto. So now they have won their last two series and 4 out of there last 5 games. Things seem to be looking up for the O's. Guthrie pitched an amazing game yesterday and Jason Berken won his Major League debut today only letting up seven hits and two runs in five innings.

Cubs at Tigers

Today’s game is a rematch of Game 2. The Cubs won that game behind a strong outing from Orval Overall. Overall tossed a complete game and allowed just 4 hits and a run. Bill Donovan pitched for the Detroit Tigers and also threw a complete game. Donovan pitched 8 innings, allowed 7 hits and 6 runs (all of them earned). Donovan was 18-7 on the season with a sparkling 2.08...

Today’s pitch count is 4. If this is news to you, you need to climb out from under that rock and start paying attention. Baltimore Orioles prospect Matt Wieters is set to make his major league debut tomorrow night. The 23-year-old catcher is batting .305/.387/.504 with five home runs in his second year as a professional. [...]

Unverified Voracity With The Half Cop-Out

Site note. Yes, you have "points." They don't do anything yet and won't until I can integrate some simple voting mechanisms, but the general idea is: annoy enough people and get enough downvotes and you get temporarily banned; continue on that path and the bans get progressively longer. The math might be tricky, lest I unleash a thermonuclear banhammer holocaust...

Wieters & Daniel Cabrera Released from Washington

I am all for Matt Wieters coming up to the majors, being annointed as the savior of the franchise, selling tickets and walking on water; however, for all my excitement -- will he make the team better? Not really -- at least now? I do love that the best prospect in the game will make his debut in the black and the orange on Friday against the Tigers, but the influx of young talent...

Expectant Orioles fans

One of the many things the sports media do is build a set of expectations. Here in Baltimore, we’re seeing that put into play as the Orioles call up the player widely regarded as baseball’s No. 1 prospect, catcher Matt Wieters. The club itself helped crank up the hype machine by announcing on Tuesday — during [...]

Nationals-Orioles: It Doesn’t Matter

So you know how the MASN Network has this new “Defining Moments” campaign for the Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles? You know, the commercials where “fans” are giving “their” favorite defining moments from both clubs over recent years? Yeah. So here’s a defining moment for both clubs as they prepare to Battle for the Beltway, which is [...]

Holy pitching!

Last week a Chicago Sun-Times writer was on ESPN proclaiming that the acquisition of Jake Peavy would give the Chicago White Sox, far and away, the best pitching staff in the AL Central--an opinion shared by this guy--not just because of Peavy’s talents but because of how poor the pitching is in the division. Peavy is a very good pitcher. I have no desire to argue otherwise. I...
