What doesn't kill them will only make them stronger. Devastating loss? Who cares? The Mets turned the tables on the Phillies, scoring four runs with two outs in the eighth inning, winning by a score of 6-3. The Mets are disappointing people everywhere by refusing to collapse. They're now on top of the NL East again by a half game. Carlos Delgado was a monster in this game. He warmed up with an RBI single in the first inning. I was almost hoping the Mets wouldn't score in the first. It might jinx them. In the sixth, Delgado drove one into the right field stands. And with two outs in the eight, he smashed an opposite field homer to tie the game. Is it crazy to think he might be creeping up in the MVP race? He's now hit 30 home runs 11 times in his career After the first baseman knotted the score at three, Carlos Beltran (three hits) singled and stole second. The Phillies then intentionally walked Ryan Church to set up a Brad Lidge-Daniel Murphy matchup. In the biggest at-bat of his short career, the rookie snapped an 0-16 slide with a double off the untouchable reliever to drive in the eventual winning run. Brian Schneider capped things off with a bloop down the left field line, which plated the last two runs. Johan Santana kept the Mets in the game, with six strong innings. He gave up five hits, struck out six and walked three. The only runs he let up came on long balls by Ryan Howard and Jayson Werth. Is Werth the new Pat Burrell? I'm not sure who that makes Burrell, but he's losing his "Met killer" tag. And I guess Howard is the new Dave Kingman - you get a home run or a strikeout, and not much else. Brian Stokes picked up the win, throwing a scoreless seventh inning (and pitched two shutout innings on Tuesday). Pedro Feliciano and Joe smith took care of the eighth, with some help from David Wright, who made another Brooks Robinson play throwing out Shane Victorino. He probably didn't deserve to win the Gold Glove last year, but this season is another story. Luis Ayala was perfect in the ninth, notching the save. Charlie Manuel and the Phillies helped out the Mets enormously in this game. The Phils had runners on first and second with nobody out in the sixth, and Manuel elected not to have Victorino bunt. Instead, the center fielder struck out (why the heck is he batting fifth, anyway?), and Santana set down Werth and Pedro Feliz with ease to wiggle out of the jam. In the seventh, Jimmy Rollins stole second with two outs and Chase Utley at the plate, which cleared the way for the Mets to intentionally walk the second baseman, setting up a righty-righty matchup between Stokes and Burrell. Burrell grounded out weakly to third. Rollins really has no clue when to steal a base and when to stay put. How many times this year have we seen him try to steal third with two outs, and even two strikes on the batter? Not smart. The biggest Manuel blunder was not inserting a warmed-up and ready-to-go Lidge to face Delgado in the eighth. Manuel was willing to use his closer in the eighth, because he eventually did bring him in. Only it was too late by then. The Mets are now 10-5 against Philadelphia. The two teams meet for the final time on September 5th-7th at Shea. I'm sure those last three games will be as much fun as all the others have been.

  • do u know why victorino is batting 5 in this lineup chump. He is having a great year batting around 290. Has power something your team luis castillo doesnt have. He leads the team in runs scored. The phils are so much better than the mets. Phillies have just more stars on their team and the mets bullpen blows

Delgado is the new "Batman"

Everyone wrote off Carlos Delgado including me. But now his has become a everyday super hero and has given the Mets that power they needed. Will The Phillies Resign Burrell?

Phillies outfielder Pat Burrell is having a pretty solid year, hitting .261 with 30 HR, but that doesn't mean the Phillies will throw a big contract at him. They have opened their wallets for several players already, and Burrell, 32, isn't in the Phillies long term plans. While the Phillies have talked with Burell, I doubt they are willing to give him the same deal he signed...

Mets Stat: Delgado Multi Homers

DELGADO: 11 TIMES 30, JOINS 12 OTHERS For the second time in three days, Carlos Delgado belted a pair of home runs in a Mets victory, and his second homer on Wednesday at Philadelphia tied the score in the eighth inning. That was his 30th home run this season, and he became only the 13th player in major-league history to reach the 30 marked in as many as 11 seasons. Hank...

Roster moves: Cancel, Reyes 2 & 3, Figgy, Rincon....

The Mets placed Ramon Castro on the 15 day DL with a right Quad strain and recalled Robinson Cancel. I know Castro is a rare power threat catcher but he just proves every season he can't stay healthy and the Mets should really consider whether they should re-sign him. Cancel hit .233 in 30 ABs as the third catcher, he can also play 1B and LF if necessary for a big man he is actually...

Delgado wants to return in '09

If Carlos Delgado has his way, he will be the first baseman for the New York Mets in 2009. And, over the last two months, we've seen what happens when Delgado has his way — especially with opposing pitchers.

Hamels Elbow Would Have Exploded!

Message to Charlie Manuel- quit counting the damn pitches. Cole Hamels should have pitched the 8th inning, instead asshat Ryan Madson blew the game. To paraphrase Jay-Z- If you're havin' 'pen problems I feel bad for you son, I got 99 pitches so I can't throw one. Click on the URL for the full article containg more reasoning for allowing Hamels to pitch...

My Apologies

Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated… Thanks to a day job that has suddenly doubled as a night job, and a list of "ASAP" responsibilities longer than my credit report, the Amazins have been forced to the back seat for the time being. And to both of my loyal readers, I apologize. I'll be [...]

Pedro: Santana 'halfway' to greatness

Johan Santana hasn't lost a game since June. Still, the questions linger, "Is he an ace? Is he great? Is he worth the $137.5 million investment and four prospects the Mets dealt to get him from Minnesota?"

Will The Mets Put Jon Niese In A Position To Succeed?

One of the ways to judge the effectiveness of a manager is to see if he puts his players in a position to succeed. Reliever Scott Schoeneweis is murder against lefty batters but can't get out righty batters. A good manager would put Schoeneweis in the game against a lefty batter that his manager won't pitch hit for in a crucial situation.

Welcome Back, Carl; Now Pack Your Crap

Just a week after returning from the 3 year DL, Carl Pavano has been placed on waivers. Do I need to even ask Yankees fans if they'd be happy to be rid of him?

Thursday: Delgado sinks Phillies, Mets back in front

Carlos Delgado went 3-for-4 with two home runs including a game-tying solo shot, setting the table for a four-run eighth inning in the Mets 6-3 win at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies finish their homestand 7-2. Circumstances were a little different in last night's contest because of the depleted bullpens, but make it two straight Phillies losses that occurred in the eighth inning...

Phillies acquire Matt Stairs

With the waiver deadline looming on August 31st, the Phillies have been searching for one more bat off the bench, and they have finally acquired one. Left-handed hitter Matt Stairs was recently designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, and now the Phillies have acquired him for a prospect. As of now, the identity of that prospect is unknown, but it won't be a top-end...

Manuel, Mets exercise 'the demons'

In Jerry Manuel's brief two-month tenure as Mets manager, he lost his closer (Billy Wagner), two starters (John Maine), second baseman (Luis Castillo) and a pinch hitter/utility man (Marlon Anderson). He also adopted a (un)healthy list of injured troops including Ryan Church, Pedro Martinez, Moises Alou, Angel Pagan, Orlando Hernandez and Matt Wise.
