The Mets head back to Shea after winning six out of seven in Washington and Pittsburgh, and in first place by a game and a half. They did what they were supposed to do against the teams they're supposed to do it against (didn't Yogi Berra once say that?). The bullpen is still the big question mark of the team, though. You'd like to see the offense score more than two runs against the Pirates yesterday, but you'd also like to see the relief corps not cough up five runs in three innings. Luis Ayala, a bullpen turns its lonely eyes to you. Remember when the Mets and Braves had a rivalry? That didn't last long. The Braves are now one of the teams the Mets need to beat up on. Atlanta is entrenched in fourth place, and the glory days are now long gone. They're not even on TBS anymore. Their announcers were an instant cure for my insomnia, as they had a nice soothing quality about them. "Here's Chipper." Forty-five seconds of silence. "I hope he gets a hit." Crickets chirping. "I decided to wear blue slacks today." Chipper Jones grounds out to second. "I think it's going to rain tomorrow." They remind me of my grandparents having a conversation on the front porch. I didn't think I'd miss them but I do. Do I have to start tuning in to WGN for my bad announcing fix? Here are the pitching matchups: Tuesday: Jo-Jo Reyes (3-9, 5.33) vs. Oliver Perez (9-7, 3.91) Wednesday: Jair Jurrjens (11-8, 3.15) vs. Mike Pelfrey (11-8, 3.91) Thursday: Mike Hampton (2-1, 6.92) vs. Pedro Martinez (4-3, 4.96) Mets Among League Leaders: Jose Reyes: First in NL in hits (161), triples (14) and multiple hit games (50), 10th in average (.304), third in runs (88) and second in stolen bases (40). David Wright: Third in NL in RBIs (95), fifth in doubles (34), fourth in walks (75), sixth in runs (84) and ninth in hits (141). Johan Santana: Fourth in NL in ERA (2.75), second in innings pitched (177) and eighth in strikeouts (148). Ex-Mets on the Braves: Tom Glavine: He's 2-4 with a 5.54 ERA in 2008, and is now out for the season. I hope you're enjoying your time back home, Tom. Thank god you're not on the Mets anymore. Mike Hampton: He's actually not on the DL, which is a complete miracle. But thank god he's not on the Mets anymore. Ruben Gotay: He's batting .225 with two home runs and six RBIs. Thank god he's not on the Mets anymore. Royce Ring: He was recently released after putting up the worst numbers for a Braves pitcher who appeared in as many games as he did since the 1870s. He was 2-1 with an 8.46 ERA, a 1.88 WHIP, a .333 batting average against and a .400 OBP against. He couldn't even crack the Mets bullpen with those numbers. Thank god he's not on the Mets anymore.

Interesting roster moves coming....

The Mets have three players currently on rehab assignment, once a player has completed the required disabled list days ( 15/60 days) and is cleared by the medical staff to resume baseball activities, the team is required to re-instate that player 20 days from his first rehab game ( 30 days pitchers).Of the three players Luis Castillo is the closest to returning but he's also...

Mets won't use starters as relievers (Closer)

After yesterday's sobering news from Billy Wagner's latest MRI, the Mets are back in crisis mode with their bullpen - but not desperate enough to mess with the rotation at this point. Manager Jerry Manuel basically ruled out using a starter to replace Wagner as closer, despite saying a week ago that it was a contingency plan he would consider. Manuel even spoke to John...

Decision time approaches for Castillo

Luis Castillo is expected to make his first start at NYSEG Stadium for the Binghamton Mets tonight. Castillo is 1-for-8 in three starts with the B-Mets and 2-for-28 in 11 rehab games between GCL, St. Lucie and the Binghamton Mets. Let me do the math for you: that's .071.

Is Wagner Done for rest of the Year???

The Mets and Billy Wagner say no, that he is not finished for the year, despite what is looking like a very ominous elbow injury. I'm no doctor, but the fact that both Wagner and GM Omar Minaya described the inflammation as actually getting worse, that's not a good sign. The immediate plan is to leave Wagner on the shelf until the swelling subsides and then have another MRI...

Church hitless for New Orleans

Ryan Church made his first start in the outfield Monday night for the New Orleans Zephyrs. He went 0-for-2, a strike out in the second and fly out in the fifth.

Minaya says Wagner not done for season

Mets GM Omar Minaya said he doesn't believe Billy Wagner is done for the season. "No, he's not done for the year, but the news is not good," Minaya said on Mets Extra on WFAN. "There's no way to sugarcoat it."

Knight pitches Team USA to medal round

New York Mets pitcher Brandon Knight pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing two runs and five strikouts, leading Team USA to a 4-2 win over Taiwan and advancing the U.S. to the medal round in the 2008 Summer Olympics Games in Beijing.

Deaths At Shea Stadium Tonight Narrowly Avoided

Me, The Minister Of Fun, and dozens of other Mets fans are trapped at the top of a Shea Stadium escalator, people are shouting, "Walk back, walk back!" and we're all about to die…. Before I go further into the 30-second soccer riot on an escalator that I hope to God I won't have nightmares about [...]

inGame: Mets 7, Braves 3

Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the New York Mets (69-57) offense woke up, scoring five runs on their way to a 7-3 win over the Atlanta Braves Tuesday night at Shea Stadium.

Steve Pearce--Met Killer

Two straight Monday afternoon games against the Mets. Two deficits. Two game winning hits by Steve Pearce.---Pearce has been very unimpressive since his callup, but this makes two weeks in a row that he did in the Mets in the Pirates' final at-bat.-Paul Maholm was shaky early and gave up a run in the first (shocking, I know), but limited the damage and allowed just one more run in...

20 Years Ago: A Look Back at the 1988 Mets

The year was 1988. Bill Cosby's sweaters hypnotized us into buying Jell-O Pudding Pops. The nation was swept up in the controversy of the day: Which one of the Golden Girls was Axl Rose singing about in "Sweet Child o' Mine" (Of course it turned out to be Bea Arthur)? And the movie Cocktail inspired a generation of children to quit playing Go Fish, drop out of elementary...

Mets Bolster Bullpen, Sign Reyes

The Mets continue to bolster their bullpen by signing veteran reliever Al Reyes. Reyes, who was released by the Rays last week, is 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in twenty-six games this season for the Rays. While he is injury prone, he is very effective in late innings and should give the Mets bullpen a much needed boost. The Mets are obviously preparing for the final stretch by adding this...

Transaction: Mets sign Al Reyes

Another Reyes is joining the Mets. This time, it's reliever Al Reyes, who was released by the Tampa Rays two weeks ago. Reyes was 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA with Tampa this season. He had two stints on the disabled list.
