Ailing right-hander John Maine might be shut down for the season if Jerry Manuel and the Mets don't like what they see from Maine's shoulder in a throwing session this week, Manuel told reporters today.

Maine, who has a bone spur in his shoulder, is coming off his worst start in almost a year Saturday night, when he gave up eight earned runs in 7 2/3 innings of an 8-3 home loss to the Astros.

Maine told The Post after the game that he planned to have the bone spur removed by way of arthroscopic surgery after the season. Manuel, though, said this afternoon that the surgical timetable for Maine could be speeded up if the Mets aren't happy with Maine's throwing session.

Maine is scheduled to start next weekend in Florida against the Marlins, but Manuel said Maine would be put down for the year ?- not just three or four starts -- should the session not go well.

The Mets' options to replace Maine in the rotation would be limited until the call-up period starts Sept. 1. They are highly unlikely to land a starter through the waivers process, so Brian Stokes would appear to be the choice before Brandon Knight, Jon Niese or Robert Parnell could be brought up next month.

Pitching In

Newsday reported today that John Maine was administered a cortisone shot prior to his start on Saturday. The result: pain, soreness and his least effective outing of his career.

Maine gets Cortisone Shot, but might not be enough........

With John Maine telling Newsday that he recieved a cortisone shot in order to make last Saturday's start against the Astros, there's a very real possiblity that tomorrow's side session could be the last time he climbs a mound this season. Maine is going to need surgery anyway to shave down a bone spur in the back of his right shoulder, and if he is shut down early...

inGame: Astros 8, Mets 3

The Houston Astros (65-64) snapped the New York Mets (72-58) modest four-game winning streak, 8-3.

Let the hand wringing begin....Maine

If you asked John Maine I'm sure he'd be disappointed with his results this year, Maine seems to be his own worst critic and in a year where he looked to expand upon his 15 wins from last season it just hasn't worked out that way. Maine had a great first half in 2007 but struggled in the dog days of the summer, he spoke of this year being more consistent from start to...

Maine's pain hurts Mets more

Mets manager Jerry Manuel began interviewing himself during Saturday's post-game press conference. Not sure if it's a feeble attempt to speed up the process or a sign Manuel is cracking, talking to voices in his head.

I'd go with Claudio Vargas

Now that it's official, John Maine is on the DL and the rest of his season is in jeopardy, the Mets need to find another starter. Brian Stokes can spot start and I know alot of people will be clamouring for Jon Niese or Bobby Parnell, but I'd go with a more conservative approach, Claudio Vargas. John Maine's spot has approximately five starts left which means the team...

Maine on the DL............

The Mets chances of holding off the hard-charging Phillies in the National League East just took a major hit when the team announced Monday it was placing starter John Maine on the 15-day disabled list as he continues to try to battle through a painful bone spur behind his right shoulder. Luis Castillo, recovered from his hip flexor injury, took Maine's spot on the roster...

Maine to DL, Castillo activated

The New York Mets have placed John Maine on the disabled list. Maine is suffering from a bone spur in his right shoulder. Meanwhile, Luis Castillo has been activated and will start tonight against the Houston Astros.

Maine gets pounded for 8 runs, Mets lose 8-3

Low-lights: John Maine got hammered, pitching only 5.2 innings, giving up 10 hits, 8 runs, 2 walks, 4 stirkeouts.. He threw 105 pitches and looks like he is nursing his injury. Mets have to be careful with him. Highlights: Ryan Church continue to hit in his comeback going 2 for 4 with a RBI Brian Schneider hit a 2 run HR, Jose Reyes went 2 for 4 in a losing effort...

MLB Punchlines:John Maine Headed to the DL

The Red Sox could be making their last trip to Yankee Stadium this week. The teams start a three game series tonight. (NY Times)Joba's road back continued with a 35 pitch bullpen session at the Stadium yesterday afternoon. (NY Post)Hopefully Mike Pelfrey has plenty more bullets in that right arm of his. The Mets need them more then ever after placing John Maine on the DL yesterday...

Maine shoulder reason for concern

John Maine expects to have arthroscopic surgery this winter to remove a bone spur from his ailing right shoulder but plans to pitch through the pain the rest of the season. The Mets New York Mets can only hope Maine fares better than he did last night. The combination of Maine's worst start in almost a year and anemic hitting led to an 8-3 loss to the Astros that brought...

Delgado and Pelfrey are a winning combo!, Beat Astros 9-1

Mike Pelfrey pitches a complete game, gives up 6 hits, 1 walk and strikes out 6....He continues to pitch well despite the bad news that John Maine went on the 15 day DL. Carlos Delgado hit 2 HR's and drives in 6 RBI's..................... Jose Reyes goes 3 for 4 with a Double and a Triple and 2 RBI's. He also stole his 41st base... Ryan Church continues to hit...

Castillo will be back activated today! - Who goes down?

In a stunning but easy to decipher turnaround, Castillo will not only return Saturday but will get his second base job back. Castillo has been on the disabled list since July 3 with a strained left hip flexor. The Mets have been prospering with the tandem of rookie Argenis Reyes and Damion Easley at second base and Manuel has been saying for a while that Castillo would have to...

Don't forget the offense....

I said this after the Mets lost that Monday game to Pittsburgh, most would be happy with their current record and expect to loss a few. But the way the Mets have lost just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and worried about how long they will stay in contention. They Mets have lost two in a row and all kinds of warning signs have been going off during these defeats. John Maine had...

DL Duaner: gives him a rest & makes room for Reyes.....

It's hard for me to admit, Duaner Sanchez was one of my favorite players from the 2006 team and I've been rooting for him ever since to return. But after losing almost two years to an injury I just don't think he has the stamina to continue without taking a breather. When he pitches on back to back nights his velocity is noticeably down and then when he does take a couple...
