The big news coming out of Queens is word that Billy Wagner is done for the season, and most likely next year too, as he'll need Tommy John surgery. And that will probably be the end of Wagner's career with the Mets. The Mets will look to former Nationals reliever Luis Ayala to continue filling [...]

What should Omar Minaya do for 2009?
Wagner's Injury Gives Chance To Reflect On Value Of Closers
Billy Wagner is out for the rest of this season and possibly all of 2009, too. That's bad news, especially since the Mets are on the hook for $10.5 million in salary to Wagner for next year.
Billy Wagner Not Feeling Good!
As if the Mets' playoff push didn't take a big enough hit with two straight losses entering Sunday's doubleheader nightcap, All-Star closer Billy Wagner just cut short a simulated game after about a dozen pitches because of what GM Omar Minaya called "discomfort" in his left elbow.
Wagner, who has been on the disabled list since Aug. 3, will consult with...
Breaking News: Wagner is done for the year, will have surgery!
Billy Wagner will undergo surgery this week on his left elbow and will miss a year, a Mets official confirmed early Monday afternoon.
An MRI exam taken Monday revealed that Wagner has suffered a torn MCL in his left elbow, requiring surgery.
Wagner, 37, had 27 saves and a 2.30 ERA for the Mets this season, but went on the disabled list on Aug. 5 with left elbow inflammation....
Wagner's comeback cut short
After throwing a handful of pitches in a simulated game between games of Sunday's day-night doubleheader, Billy Wagner walked off the Shea Stadium mound in pain.
Wagner Shut down......
I had gone under the presumption that Billy Wagner wouldn't be back this season, hoping that either Luis Ayala or AL Reyes could step-up into the closers role after the in-house options of Sanchez, Feliciano, Smith and Heilman failed. But then after all of the positive reports about Wagner's progress I became optimistic about his chances of returning. All he needed was one...
Wagner quote: "Mets Must Go After K-Rod"
Billy Wagner endorsed the Mets pursuing Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez as a free agent this winter, but Wagner vowed to return to the majors. Wagner will have surgery Wednesday, with a ligament transplanted from a knee.
Wagner said he's been counted out his whole career, from being 5-foot-9 to coming from a town of 360 people to going to a Division III college.

Teams must take a hint from Wagner, Gordon deals
Mets closer and former Phillie Billy Wagner is owed approximately $13.5 million through 2009. It's likely he's played his last game as a New York Met, just as Tom Gordon played his last with the Phils on July 5. Passing on Wags' four-year, $43 million deal looks better by the minute, but the Phils didn't exactly hit the jackpot with Flash's three-year, $18M deal...
With Billy Out, Will Maine Go To The Bullpen???
While Billy Wagner's comeback attempt may have ended yesterday, it seems that John Maine still has an outside chance of returning this season, perhaps in a bullpen role.
Maine had hoped to begin throwing tomorrow, but those plans were pushed back until next Monday, a delay that cast further doubt upon a return this season. Maine has not picked up a baseball since he was placed...
Mountain Climbing- Phillies
With 18 games remaining in the 2008 MLB season the Philadelphia Phillies trail the New York Mets by 1.5 games in the NL East and the Milwaukee Brewers by 3 games for the NL Wild Card. 18 games is not a lot, in fact, it's only 11% of the 162 game regular season schedule, and yet it all comes down to this final portion. The rivalry between the Mets and Phils will have to go on...
Will 2009 closer be in-house or Acquired
With the news that Billy Wagner will need TJ surgery the Mets will need a new closer next year, more then likely at 37 y/o and his contract up Wagner's Mets career is over. As I posted earlier today the Mets will try to find away through the rest of the season but will need to find a permanent solution for next season. The Mets could look at in-house solutions and while there...
MLB Punchlines: Joe Girardi Will Be Back Next Season
Rays pitcher Juan Salas suffered a seizure yesterday afternoon at Fenway Park. (Tampa Trib)Joe Girardi will be back as Yankees manager because according to Hank Steinbrenner, "He's done everything he could. That's the bottom line." (Seattle Times)Is it even a question that the Yankees are going to get Mark Teixeira and CC for that matter via free agency this winter? (OC Register...
