Found April 25, 2009 on Dom D's Mets Fan Blog:
  • Former Met, Armando Benitez, has signed with the Atlantic League’s Newark Bears in an effort to revitalize his career. Benitez is best known for his contributions to the Mets while on the opposing team.
  • The Mets have re-signed RHP Nelson Figueroa and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo. Figueroa, who was disgruntle following his prompt demotion after his quality outing last Sunday, decided to return with the hopes of winning a job in the weak starting rotation.
  • The Mets also signed 3B Mike Lamb to a minor league deal. This move is strictly to help the Bisons, who are off to a horrible start. Don’t expect to see Lamb at the major league level anytime soon unless David Wright is out for a length of time.
  • If the Mets pitching woes continue and Jerry Manuel sticks to his word the Mets have a number of options in regards to the starting rotation. In the minors they have youngsters Jon Niese and Dillon Gee. While Gee hasn’t thrown in a major league game ever, he did have an impressive spring. They also have veterans, Freddy Garcia and Nelson Figueroa looming as well. If the Mets don’t like what they have internally, they could always turn to Paul Byrd, who is seeking work and is a reliable innings eater.

Paul Byrd and HGH; Perspective & Our Heroes Are Not What We Think They Are

In sports, entertainment or any walk of life, we all like, appreciate and honor a great story. However, as well, things are not as they seem. Honored and praised for his performance in the playoffs, Cleveland starter Paul Byrd impressed fans and experts alike with his clutch performances during the ALDS and ALCS. Now, everything has lost it's luster. We don't know if...

Wright working on being unspectacular defensively

New York Mets star David Wright might be a Gold Glove winner, but he also has the most errors of any major league third baseman over the past three seasons. So this spring, Wright — who has a barehanded, over-the-shoulder catch in San Diego on his résumé — is working on doin...

Mets Notes - Figgy Back, Big Pelf, Redding, Heads Rolling

The Daily News reports that Nelson Figueroa has decided to re-sign with the organization after testing free agency by refusing a minor-league assignment earlier in the week. Apparently, sometimes the best opportunity is where they know and like you, even if he was abruptly designated for assignment to make room for a second lefty reliever, [...]

Calm Down, Wright Has Slumped In April Before

I’m finding some interesting reads this morning from some who are concerned about David Wright’s lack of production this month. Newsday narrows it down for us… After hitting .342 (13-for-38) in his first 10 games, Wright is hitting .188 (6-for-32) in his last eight to drop his average to .271. He has only six RBIs, three of [...]

Is David Wright in the worst slump of his career...

How can a guy hitting .288 be considered in a slump ?When your name is David Wright and your the face of a franchise, in one of the biggest baseball cities in America, your expected to do a lot more then hit for a decent average. There is an expectation level placed on Wright that is based on his own accomplishments, Wright has been incredibly consistent, not just over his career...

Freddy Garcia May Retire

Adam Rubin is reporting that Freddy Garcia is contemplating retirement after getting pounded by Syracuse on Monday. According to observers Garcia was topping out at 85 mph. Originally I thought Garcia would be a great pick up for the fifth slot. It was clear in spring training that he is not the same pitcher since he [...]

Mets, Others Consider Martinez

With teams pitching rotations starting to take hits, the Pedro Martinez race is slowly heating up. At this point, teams are not going to pay Martinez 5 million dollars to pitch. Martinez was 5-6 with a 5.61 ERA in 20 games last season for the Mets, but averaged a little over five innings per start. The Rangers and Nationals are both in desperate need of a starting pitching, but are...

Mets sign Lambo...

The Mets have signed Mike Lamb to a minor league deal, while in Houston Lamb was affectionately know as Lambo for his unusual batting stance/swing and his solid power numbers. The 33 y/o left handed hitting corner infielder was let go by the Brewers out of spring training when he refused assignment to AAA. Throughout his career he has primarily been a third baseman but spent significant...

Byrd Interested In Angels?

Free agent pitcher Paul Byrd is reportedly interested in joining the Angels, the LA Times is reporting. The report goes on to say that the Angels do not have much interest in signing Byrd, mostly because they are not looking to add money to their payroll. "My agent talked to them pretty recently . . . but they're not spending money, and they say they're going to stay...

The Church Debate....

The Mets have been waiting for that big two out, clutch hit and it finally came today, in the sixth inning of the game against the Nationals. While the Mets were leading the game by a score of 5-2, most of those runs could be credited to the shabby Nationals defense, once again the Mets had left a small colony of men on base. Up until the sixth inning they were 3-10 with RISP and...

Figgy back in the organization

According to Adam Rubin of the Daily News, Nelson Figueroa has re-signed a minor league deal with the Mets. After being mistreated by management, Figueroa had opted for free agency once he cleared waivers. As the Mets rotation was falling apart Figgy was testing the free agent market, with Manuel threatening rotational changes it looks like the Mets give him the best opportunity...

4/27 Minor League Report!

Buffalo 1, Syracuse 7 Freddy Garcia’s turn tonight. Boy this is getting ugly, as ugly as the St. Lucie Mets last April (remember they lost 500 in a row?). The Bisons, in addition to getting a miserable outing from Garcia (who is now contemplating retirement), had just 2 hits, a homer from Cory Sullivan (1 for [...]

Webb Has Shoulder Setback

Diamondbacks ace Brandon Webb faced another setback in his attempts to return from the disabled list with shoulder problems. Webb was playing catch when he felt the discomfort, and the Diamondbacks were forced to cancel his bullpen session and shut him down indefinitely. The Diamondbacks were hoping Webb would be ready to go on a rehab assignment sometime next week, but are now forced...

NYBD MILB Weekly Notes

A day later than normal, but here are some thoughts to chew on. - You think David Wright is having troubles? Nick Evans is hitting .094 at Buffalo. Two of his three homers, and four of his seven RBI’s, came in one game against Scranton. - Jonathan Niese could not get out of the fourth inning on [...]

Casual Friday: Pitching Tidbits

The Yankees are all about the pinstripes, in every sense of the word. The rest of MLB is more casual. This is the latest post in a Friday series called Casual Friday, in which I take a quick look around the rest of Major League Baseball.* Good pitching stops good hitting. That saying couldn't have been more true this week in Florida where Pirates pitching cooled off a red-hot...
