It looks like the Mets are taking some time away from their focus on pitching to see if they can fill a vital spot on the bench. Several sources are confirming that former Minnesota utility player Nick Punto, is being targeted by the Mets.
Lavelle E. Neal of the Star Tribune in Minnesota, revealed that the Mets have gone as far as requesting medical records on the scrappy utility player.
The Twins want infielder Nick Punto back as a starter or a utility player and will meet with Punto's agent, Jeff Caulfield, during the meetings. Caulfield has received calls from several teams, including the Phillies and Mets, with the Mets even looking at Punto's medical records.
Punto has almost no power and owns a career batting average of .252. Last season he returned from an injury and batted .284 in 338 at-bats playing mostly shortstop and second base. He has good speed and stole 15 bases in 2008.
He can play 2B, SS, 3B and CF, and is regarded as an excellent defensive player in the m...

I agree. Unless Luis Castillo is dealt, signing Punto makes no sense for the Mets.

Decision time approaches for Castillo
Luis Castillo is expected to make his first start at NYSEG Stadium for the Binghamton Mets tonight. Castillo is 1-for-8 in three starts with the B-Mets and 2-for-28 in 11 rehab games between GCL, St. Lucie and the Binghamton Mets. Let me do the math for you: that's .071.
Castillo re-signs with the Mets
According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com, citing 'major-league sources,' the Mets and 2B Luis Castillo are close to agreeing to a four-year, $25 million contract.
The Astros, Nationals, and Cubs all had expressed interest in Castillo, whom the Mets acquired from the Twins at the non-waiver deadline for two minor leaguers.

Opinion: Luis Castillo Will Be Traded
This morning, on his blog at ESPN.com, Buster Olney writes,
The Mets also have quietly continued to gauge the market for Luis Castillo, and if they find a taker for at least some of his salary, that would leave them in position to pursue Orlando Hudson, who also is being courted by the Washington Nationals.
This is about the fourth or fifth time I've read a rumor like this...

Mets Non Tender Reyes, Burgos
The Mets have non-tendered reliever Ambiorix Burgos and second baseman, Argenis Reyes.
I expected the Mets to part company with Burgos, especially after the hit and run car accident in the Dominican Republic that left two women dead. Burgos is expected to get major jail time when the authorities are done with him.
Non-tendering Argenis Reyes, actually came as a big surprise to me...

Getting rid of Castillo in the offseason??
The Mets are likely to take a huge financial hit this winter if they are able to trade Luis Castillo and his $25-million contract. But it's becoming more apparent that these two sides are heading for a divorce when this season is over, and the latest example came Tuesday when manager Jerry Manuel opted to start rookie Argenis Reyes over the three-time All-Star.

Sort of at least. Now we`re hearing that the Yanks have interest in Bill Hall of the Brewers and Nick Punto.
