TEAMS: Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, New York Mets
So, how do you beat the red-hot Mets? Not letting them score a run is a good start. The Phillies beat the Mets 3-0 as Brett Myers completely dominated New York in his best outing of the year, throwing 8 shutout innings while striking out 10 batters and allowing only 3 hits and 2 walks. Myers cruised all game long and continues to be a stud pitcher since his return to the majors. Tonight's performance makes for 9 straight good-to-great starts in a row. In that time he has allowed 11 runs in 63 and 2/3rds innings pitched for a sparkling ERA of 1.57. He has also gone 6-1 in that span and struck out 56 batters while walking only 15. And, one more stat for you: Myers has allowed only 2 runs in his last 31 innings. Myers is a beast and he has been the Phillies MVP since his return to the majors on July 23rd.
The Phillies also got news today that a former player is returning to the fold. Tadahito Iguchi, a pivotal player in the Phillies 2007 campaign, has signed with the team for th...

Gotta love having Tad back, he never shoulda left. Looks like I missed quite a great performance by Myers while I was at the Larry the Cable Guy show. Lets hope Moyer and Cole keep it going!

LOVE the 1-2 punch of Myers and Hamels if the Phillies make the playoffs!

Phils Sign Iguchi
With 22 games remaining in the season, the Phillies have turned to an old face to hopefully turn things around. This afternoon, the Phillies have agreed to terms with infielder Tadahito Iguchi.
Iguchi was acquired from the White Sox last season when Chase Utley went down with a broken hand. In 48 games, both as a starter and a bat off the bench, Iguchi batted .304 with 2 home...
Report: Iguchi Returning To Phillies
Welcome back, Tad.
The Phillies have come to an agreement with Tadahito Iguchi, according to Todd Zolecki.
Nothing else on the acquisition yet, but Iguchi will provide nice bench help. (...)
Hot Stove Rivalry: Who's the Better Veteran Pitcher, Moyer or Martinez?
Jeff Freier, Hot Stove New York - Jamie Moyer is 12-7 with a 3.80 ERA. Pedro is 5-3 and a 5.07 ERA. That says it all. If the Mets had Moyer instead of Pedro this year, the race would be over.
J Platt, Hot Stove New York – If you look at the span of an entire career, it's Pedro, hands down. If you're looking at this season, it's Moyer. Pedro has struggled with injuries...
Hot Stove Rivalry: Who’s the Better Veteran Pitcher, Moyer or Martinez?

Hot Stove Rivalry: Who's better - Chase Utley or David Wright
J Platt, Hot Stove Philly – This is a tough one. Both players are irreplaceable cogs to their team. Wright has been more consistent overall, while Utley started like a house on fire, but cooled after the All-Star Break. While Wright possesses more power, Utley is more dependable for the big hit. Defensively, Utley has improved but Wright has developed into a Gold Glove caliber...
Phillies blank Mets 3-0 behind magnificent Myers
Brett Myers continued his second-half resurrection, allowing three hits and striking out 10 through eight shutout innings, mastering the Mets in a crucial 3-0 victory. Considering what's at stake, a strong case can be made that Myers just finished the best start of his career. Don't bother reading the opposite angle because there was nothing the opposition could do. From...
Pedro OK to Pitch Saturday!
Pedro Martinez told reporters today that he feels healthy and will start as scheduled Saturday against the Phillies.
Martinez had been excused from the final three games of the road trip this week so he could work out at Shea Stadium with personal trainer Chris Correnti, in part because the Mets New York Mets said Martinez had trouble getting loose in his start last weekend in Miami.
Pedro stinks up Shea, Mets lose 6-2
I guess Pedro was not loose enough as he got pounded around...Only going 4 innings, 7 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk, 1 K...
Mets only got 6 hits and left 9 runners on.................
Bullpen kept the Mets in the game (6 pitchers) for the most part pitching 5 innings total, no runs, 2 hits, 2 walks, 4 K's
Mets remain only one gam up on the Phillies and Tonight remains a Must...
Taking on the Queens from Queens
Huge 3 game series in New York this weekend, starting tonight with Brett Myers vs. Mike Pelfrey. The Phillies are 3 games back of the Mets and to say this is a "must win" series for the Phightins is cliche but oh so true. Jamie Moyer vs. Pedro Martinez on Saturday and Cole Hamels vs. Johan Santana on Sunday round out the matchups.

Myers Dominates Mets In 3-0 Win
Brett Myers threw possibly the best game of his career (given the importance, stage and outing) as the Phillies defeated the Mets 3-0 at Shea Stadium Friday night. (...)
Hot Stove Rivalry: With the game on the line, who do you want at the plate?
J Platt, Hot Stove Philly ? This is a tough one. With the potent bats in the Phillies lineup, the obvious choice would be Ryan Howard. Unfortunately, Howard's strikeouts make him a liability with the game on the line. Chase Utley would be another obvious choice. While I wouldn't complain if the [...]
Hollow Men
The release of Tadahito Iguchi (now confirmed to be Japanese for "strikes out looking") got me to thinking about San Diego's projected lineup entering the season, and in doing so I realized the Padres were actually a pretty decent team on the corners? but they were downright terrible up the middle. Iguchi, Khalil Greene, Jim [...]
Maine starting to play catch!
The Mets haven't ruled out the possibility that John Maine can still pitch important innings for them this season. The club has scheduled him to resume baseball activities for the first time since being shut down on Aug.24, beginning with playing catch Sunday John Maine to start playing catch as form of rehab.
Maine is on the 15-day disabled list because a bone spur behind...

Changing Wagner's Role, Maybe Pursuing Free Agent Closer next year?
Billy Wagner is due back early next week and there is strong speculation that he will not work as the closer right away, instead working his arm back into the role.
Jerry Manuel has showed in Wagner's absence that he is willing to change closers like socks, so my gut says Wagner can be pitching in the ninth quickly if Luis Ayala suddenly remembers that he is Luis Ayala. ...
