It may be hard to believe, but last week I was criticized for drafting Nick Markakis in the fourth round of a 12 team mixed league. Was this critique correct?
Fourth round is about where I saw Markakis taken. It all of course depends where in the fourth round you took him, difference between 37th and 48th pick. Most of the leagues and magazines I have seen, had him pegged in the 30-40 overall range.
Although, I wouldn't agree quite with your justification. Don't think saying he is the 15th best hitter doesn't quite make your point. Pitchers have to factor in there too.
IN my league, Markakis is 34th best scorer (we penalize K's though). By comparison, Markakis went bottom of round 2 in my league (keeper league). Burrell has had the same production, but he was drafted in the 5th round.
But also looking at my league. Matt Holliday, Vlad Guerrero, Manny Ramirez, and Prince Fielder were all taken top of the first round and have less points then Markakis.
So I say, good job drafting. You actually got him for a bargain from the leagues I've seen.
4th round probably isn't too far off. I got him in the 8th round of my draft - but I play in a 8-team, mixed, keeper league (we actually play a combined baseball and football league, so you can trade baseball players for football players) - I believe it would work out to early 6th round if my league had 12 teams. There were definitely some questionable selections before I picked Markakis, though, especially since it's a keeper league - guys like Jeter, Figgins, Beltre, Putz, Harang, and Byrnes were all taken before Markakis.
