TEAMS: Boston Red Sox
PLAYERS: David Ortiz
Papi
So David Ortiz finally held his long-awaited press conference on Saturday morning — you know, the one where he was finally going to get to the bottom of things — and decided to heap the blame on a bunch of unidentified vitamins and supplements he apparently used without much discrimination in the past. BUT, he said, "I never buy steroids." You can read a transcript of Ortiz's opening comments here. Honestly, I can't say that I expected much else from today's ...

I was hoping it was legal over the counter supplements and it looks like it probably was at this point. Ortiz can hold his head high again. Sorry haters but Big Papi just hit another walkoff.

How exactly did he just hit another walkoff? By saying really nothing? That press conference was about as useful as tits on a bull.

Then why was the test positive for roids? Thats what you have to ask yourself. If it is possible to test positive for roids when OTC supps were used, then they need to be able to determine just that fact before saying a guy was positive for roids. I have to admit I was surprised when Papi's name came up, he is one of the few Sox I respect, even as a Yankee fan. If there is a flaw in the way they test it needs to be fixed. I have always said I feel there are far more players not using then ones that do. Hell there are 750 active players on major league rosters at any given time and we only hear about a handful of players, many of whom are not even doing them now but in fact made the mistake in the past. C'mon MLB, even though there are guys who blatantly cheated, you have to get your act together.

who gives a sh*t what he took. these "pros" should know their sports drug policy backwards and forwards. it makes my blood boil when they makeup bullsh*t excuses and people actually buy it. if he was so damn innocent then why did it take him a WEEK to address the problem? he was notified in 2004 when he tested positive for a banned substance. why wouldn't he just say "oh yea that was something that was legal to buy, etc." he had to wait a week to come up with someway to slither out of the spotlight. these guys are a joke! JUST LOOK AT HIS CAREER STATS!! IT'S TOO OBVIOUS!
    • Jayson2
Lewii5! Lesson of the day. You don't know what he tested positive for. He obviously knew the leagues drug policy because he never tested positive after 2003 when the policy was put into place. There was no policy in 2003 so why wouldn't he take something legal to enhance his performance if that's what he was taking? If it was an illegal steroid then that's a different story but we'll probably never know.

Do you really think that the average athlete can even spell half the words on this list (MLB), much less memorize it's scientific name and then locate it on a list of ingredients on a bottle of some supplement at GNC? I doubt it. Some of these drugs are illegal and banned by baseball. Some are legal and banned by baseball.

Ultimately I do agree that athletes should take more care in regards to what they're ingesting, but I do think there may be a few cases of innocent ingestion of one or more of these drugs.

i see what you're saying, but i would argue that there's no such thing as innocent ingestion.
1 easy solution would be to consult major league baseball. ask them if the product you are about to take is legal under their current policy. if they approve of the vitamin or whatever, then get documentation and go ahead and use it. i'm not asking them to get a degree in chemistry, just apply a little due diligence.

i would venture a guess that they know the meaning of every word in their CONTRACT. they aren't agents, they didn't study contract law, but they still know every stipulation and clause when it comes to MONEY. so why wouldn't they do their homework when it comes to taking supplements?

from what i understand, there were a lot of supplements given out to everyone that year. there's a news story with some interesting quotes from bronson arroyo. i've got to dig it up.

lewii5, the only 'safe' way for a player to take supplements is through a team directed regimen, after thorough research from the team's medical staff and with review by a qualified lawyer. i agree that players are responsible for what goes into their bodies. but i think there is some naivety that you can just go into GNC and grab a bottle off the shelf and you'll be fine because it's legal to buy, therefore your respective sporting league won't ban it. obviously, players are going to be paying closer attention since they are still being tested positive for PEDs.
  • MLB should make only the things you can't buy over the counter illegal, the league should give the players a pass on things you can get from GNC.

He doesn't know what he tested positive for and either does the New York times. He tested positive for performance enhancing drugs and will probably never know what they were. He waited a week because he was trying to obtain more information on what he tested positive for. He was unable to obtain that information. We shouldn't rush to judgement like alanag posting a picture of Ortiz with a syringe in his butt. If he said it was legal over the counter supplement then I believe him. We the jury find David Ortiz innocent. Next case please.

Sambot! How are you? I saw a Bronson Arroyo interview where he explained how he might show up on the list and other players also. It was very interesting.
