Only In Philadelphia

Would fans spend years belittling Pat Burrell for his perennial under-performance, only to scoff at the idea of trading him for a two-time World Series-winning, first ballot Hall of Famer and the greatest RBI producer of his generation when such rumors surface.

Terrible article. Most of the points are way off because both players would likely not return next year. This year is therefore the only time that matters, and this year Pat the Bat is arguably having the better year. The worst line, though, was the one that said that acquiring Manny makes Ryan Howard expendable. While I am sick of the trade Howard talk because I don't think there's any way to justify trading a run producer like him with a couple more years of arbitration to go, the notion that Mannyt replaces Howard is ridiculous for three reasons.

1. different positions.
2. Manny would be outta here next year.
3. Even if Manny could play first and did stick around for $20 mil next year, wouldn't you rather pay the 28 year old that money than the 37 year old (he may even be turning 38 - not sure).

back to the point of KC's article. would you take Manny for Burrell if you could? Yes or no.

Absolutely not...He's a total pain in the as*, he's a terrible fielder, he would cost 20mil to keep after this season, and oh yeah...he's 37 years old. The money would be better spent extending Burrell for another 2-3 years. And ahh, last but not least, Burrell has NO errors this season, leads the bigs in OF assists and his bat has come back to life. We don't want Manny nor do we need him!

1 year vs. a career. I like Pat, but I think this argument is ludicrous. We couldn't seem to GIVE Pat away until the end of last season. At least if Manny doesn't work out you could trade him for value as opposed to Pat which is straight up salary dump.

I know what you mean, but Pat's career numbers aren't really all that bad. Don't get me wrong, they never lived up to the contract, but that's Ed "alien head" Wade's fault more so than Pat's. I've also been a Burrell fan and I just think that putting Manny in this lineup would just become another pain in the as*, almost like the T.O. thing. Philly fans have no patience for guys like Manny and they shouldn't. But how could you trade Manny without having to pick up the option for 20 mil and then not get stuck paying half of it when he leaves? That would be like a Jim Thome/Bobby Abreu type annuity that we would be paying, and to me it's just not worth the rental headache.

yes no brainer manny over burrel, anyone who would say no to that would be stupid and doesnt know much about baseball

I guess? According to you. But am I way off in assuming that just your biased opinion? Manny is more clutch, but you can't argue the year Burrell is having. Especially if you know a lot about baseball.

By the way Burrell just threw out another runner for his league leading 11th assist this year. You won't see Manny doing that on defense. In fact Manny's lack of hustle would have him booed out of town before September.

He's old, he's a pain and his production has gone waaayy down. Not to mention that his new thing is to sit games against hard throwing pitchers. But you know "a lot about baseball."

Pat or Manny?

Manny...someone on here listed the pitchers he sat out for over the last few weeks. Joba Chamberlain was one of them among the flame throwers, I can't remember the rest of the list...I'll get it and hit you back.

Philadelphia fans are very passionate and want nothing more than a winning sports team. Pat the Bat and Manny have similiar numbers this year and surprisingly Burrell has played better in the field this season commiting 0 errors. Manny might have a tough time not playing in front of that green monster but I think he is a much more sound hitter than Burrel will ever be so if they could pull this off it would be amazing. The bottom line is that the Phillies need another starting pitcher to compliment Cole Hammels if they want to make it to the post-season.

Sports Odds

The first time Manny didn't run out a ground ball to shortstop not only would Phillies fans turn on him, but Charlie Manuel would have no choice but to bench him. If not, Jimmy Rollins would have the clubhouse up in arms over Manuel enlisting double standards for Ramirez. It would be a nightmare.

i cant see any scenario by which a Phillie fan would not want to take the chance on him.

I just gave you one.

Youre telling me that you would pass on Manny Ramirez in lieu of Pat Burrell based on the hypothetical chance he doesn't run out a ground ball? Ill trade Manny's rings for howards, burrells, rollins, jenkins, victorino, utley, hamel and lidge's combined. Unless of course winning means nothing to Philly fans.

I dont know your feelings on Burrell on way or another, but the majority of phillie fans wanted his hide up until exactly about a year ago. 6 years/$50 million = no championships or even all-star appearances for the on-time #1 pick and college player of the year. And you wont part with him for Manny?

I have to stop now. This is starting to turn into a YB Eagles conversation.

manny being manny wouldn't fly in philly. the first time he half a$$ed it, the fans would turn on him just as ursportspro just said. this is a bad deal. If anything, send them Adam Eaton and one of the right fielder, probably jenkins, for manny and make manny play right field. this deal is pretty one sided and would probably never happen, but maybe boston will get desperate to get him out of there.

manny wouldnt work in Philly, did you see all those games were he just doesnt try. how bout him missing that routine flyball then flopping over it.

I just don't understand why Manny would say he was a lifer and then the sox would want to trade him...He seems ok to me...less the staying at the Ritz carlton thing..that is kind of sketchy.

Pat Burrell is the reason that the Phillies haven't won a championship?? There are 25 men on the roster and 12 are pitchers who have a lot to do with winning. Just ask the Red Sox how much Josh Beckett helped them over Manny Ramirez. One more hitter in this lineup won't help Joe Blanton, Brett Myers, or rookie JA Happ win a World Series ring.

And on top of that Manny would've made the Phillies defense even worse behind sub par pitching. No Eagles conversation here. Just baseball.

Now that we've seen Manny play in LA, any comments?
