I guess it only took one appearance by Les Walrond and J.A. Happ out of the bullpen for the front office to realize they need another left-handed reliever. Today Scott Eyre is a Phillie. The newest Phillie has struggled this season with the Cubs this season going 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA (although all but one of his nine earned runs came in a total of one inning). A fan favorite in Chicago, Eyre "fell out of favor" with Cubs manager, Lou Pinella, and was designated for assignment (with those numbers, you'll fall out of favor with any big league manager). Eyre is happy to be moving on and getting new new opportunity in Philadelphia. Expect to see him in uniform tomorrow when the Phillies take on the Pirates. "I'm excited," Eyre said. "They have a good team and they're in a pennant race. It couldn't have turned out any better for me." Now most people will look at this as a typical move the Phillies would make. Refuse to part with prospects to land a Ron Mahay, instead get something less reliable for no cost. While I do see that point, this could be a beneficial move for the Phillies down the stretch. Will it be like last season when the Phillies caught lightning in a bottle when the acquired J.C. Romero? No shot, but if used strictly as a situational lefty, Eyre can be productive. By getting Eyre, the Phillies parted ways with pitcher Brian Schlitter. Schlitter, a 16th round draft pick in the 2007 draft, has had a good season for Clearwater going 4-3 with a 2.22 ERA and six saves.

Phils Eying Eyre

This afternoon, the Chicago Cubs designated relief pitcher Scott Eyre for assignment. Eyre struggled this season going 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in 19 relief appearances. With Kerry Wood returning from the disabled list, the underachieving Eyre was the odd man out. The Cubs now have seven days to trade him, or he will be a free agent (if he doesn't accept an assignment to Triple-A)...

Phillies blanked, trade prospect for LHP Scott Eyre

Eyre, 36, appeared in 19 games for the Cubs and has twice been on the disabled list with elbow and groin injuries. He was designated for assignment last week. The Cubs will receive Class-A right-hander Brian Schlitter. Eyre was let go by the Cubs less than two months after setting the franchise record with 33 consecutive scoreless innings. After his second stint on the DL, he returned...

Phillies acquire Scott Eyre, lefty reliever

The Phillies finally got their second left hander out of the pen, something they had been looking for since Spring Training. Scott Eyre, formerly of the Chicago Cubs, was acquired today in exchange for Single A pitcher Brian Schlitter. Eyre has had a rocky season this year, posting a 7.15 ERA while dealing with some nagging injuries. In the past he has been pretty reliable, but you...

Blonde reporter gets Gatorade bath from Cubs fan

Story of a young Chicago Cubs fan painted in red and blue dousing a female reporter unexpectedly with a Gatorade tub full of water. She never saw it coming and I love that the cameraman was still rolling tape! VIDEO!!!

23 over .500

The Cubs led 1-0 going to the top of the 3rd.  Jason Marquis kind of fell apart that inning and it was capped off by a 3-run home run by Carlos Lee.  They came right back.  In a big way. Mark DeRosa hit a grand slam to put the Cubs back up by 1 in the 3rd inning.  The Cubs sent 11 to the plate that inning as they scored 8 runs.  Soriano added a 3-run home run after DeRosa...

Beer nuts: Fine-tuning wouldn't hurt Phillies offense

The Phils were shut out for the seventh time this season and managed just four earned runs in their series with Florida, if you take away Shane Victorino's foul ball homer on Tuesday night. Minor changes should be made. For Charlie Manuel, answers haven't come easy for his struggling offense. The sit back and wait approach hasn't worked, so in the meantime, perhaps it...

Phillies blanked again; Manuel, offense share blame

Make it 23-straight innings without a run. The Phillies sink to new depths with their eighth shutout of the season, this one against the lowly Pirates. It's their first back-to-back shutout since 1999. Here are the numbers: Zero-for-nine with runners in scoring position, six hits total, 21 left stranded. A combined 2-for-36 with runners in scoring position over their last four...

Game chat: Right-handers tussle in second game

Anibal Sanchez (1-0, 3.18) and Kyle Kendrick (9-5, 4.59) have the ball when the Marlins and Phillies continue their division series tonight at 7 ET. Notes: Kendrick is hoping for better results than the last time he faced Florida, a seven-run shelling back on July 19. ? The offense will look to get it going after last night's 8-2 loss. Eric Bruntlett, who's a .546 OPS hitter against...

Nightcap report: Phils will pick up Erye's salary

Lefty Scott Eyre is owed about $1.2 million for the rest of the season. Just a few notes to pass along. According to one Chicago newspaper blog, the Phils are on the hook for Eyre's deal, as mentioned. Brian Schlitter, who was sent to Chicago, is a local product. To clear space for newly acquired reliever Scott Eyre, the Phils will probably option left-hander J.A. Happ back to...
