Snuffleupagus
Show Me the $$$: What to do with Ryan Howard? I briefly touched on this touchy subject a few days ago, and I feel it's time to revisit it. I like Ryan Howard and want him to remain a Phillie for at least 4 more seasons. I also would like a happy Ryan Howard, which means upping the money proposal may be a good idea, and ideally laying down a decent chunk of change for the next 4 to 5 years for the mammoth slugger. I'm not in favor of anything beyond 5 years because of Howard's body type, which happens to be humungo like Snuffleupagus! Not to say he won't still be mashing homeruns into his mid to late 30's, but why risk it? If come season 5 on the contract I propose above and Ryan is still proficient offensively and able to handle the defensive load, approach him about an extension. A deal of 5 years and 70 million dollars could please everyone (Howard is happy he's getting paid, fans are happy they have their awesome 1st baseman locked up, and the organizatio...

Ryan Howard for MVP

I can't believe that some people are dismissing Ryan Howard for the 2008 Most Valuable Player Award. I can't think of anyone more deserving. Albert Pujols is an incredible hitter, no doubt about it. But the Cardinals are a .500 team and will not make the playoffs. Manny Ramirez and CC Sabathia have had very productive half-seasons with the Dodgers and Brewers, respectively...

Let's Celebrate

What a weekend it was for Philadelphia sports fans. Let's start with the Phillies. They are on the verge of winning the World Series. I was at the game last night and had a chance to speak with Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins. They are so close and very ready to make it happen for all of us in Philly. One more win - tonight in Philadelphia would be nice - and the 25 year drought...

Thome's Out, Rowand's In

Pat Gillick, GM of the Philadelphia Phillies, has established that Jim Thome will be sent to the White Sox in exchange for Aaron Rowand. Thome will be back in his home state playing for a championship team. Ryan Howard will now have the first base position full-time. Aaron Rowand is supposed to be a ...

Analyzing the Phillies' Latest Trade Dream

Would the trade be worthwhile? Holliday would simply be a one-year rental unless new GM Ruben Amaro plans on locking him up long-term, but he has to deal with the ballooning salaries of a number of arbitration-eligible players including Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels. In other words, Holliday would be a Phillie for one year and one year only.

Drama, KK, Zagnut, & Cairo

Like Mary J. Blige belted- No More Drama, because there won't be much drama in the Phils camp this spring as most position battles are already determined, unless you think Andy Tracy has a chance of dethroning Ryan Howard of course. The outfield is set, the infiend is set, 4/5 of the rotation ...

Drought Alert- Philadelphia Phillies

Phils have fallen on hard times since sweeping the Braves, 3-7 in the 10 games since the trip to Atlanta. It seems that almost the entire lineup and pitching staff are in a bit of a drought. They lost 2 out of 3 to the Marlins, Cardinals, and Red Sox over the last 3 series and didn't exactly start the Angels series off with a bang (lost 7-1 last night). Click on the URL to read...

DL, Retire, or Scrub: Tom Gordon

Tom Gordon was a very successful MLB pitcher (Career stats- 138 w, 158 sv, 122 holds, 1928 k, 3.94 era, 1.36 whip). He's been a quality starting pitcher, closer, and set-up man over his 19 year career. He's pitched for the Royals, Red Sox, Cubs, Astron, Yankees, and currently the Phillies. However, his time in the summer sunshine is coming to an end because he absolutely...

Bullpen, offense fail sliding Phillies

Brett Myers has been nearly unstoppable since his stint in the minors, posting an ERA below 2 and striking out batters at a high rate. Myers finally looked human today against the Marlins as he gave up 4 runs, but he still pitched well enough to give the Phillies a chance to win. Unfortunately, the offense came up small for the Phils and the bullpen imploded in the late innings as...

Surging Phillie offense propels them into first place

All the Phillies needed to do to get Brett Myers a win was put up 12 runs. Myers, who hadn't won a game since April 17th, looked like he was on his way to another shaky start when he gave up three runs in the first inning in Friday nights game against the Florida Marlins. Fortunately, Myers settled down, striking out 11 batters and shutting the Fish out in innings 2 through 8 to...

Thirsty Thursday: Bottoms Up

Hey the Phils won. No, really, I'm not joking, they won and won well. Ryan Howard, Pedro Feliz, JA Happ, Clay Condrey, and even Carlos Ruiz chipped in for the big "W" in the good column. Wins like that deserve a celebration, a celebration of chugging until the stomach churns. For a recap of the game click on the URL.
