With the waiver deadline looming on August 31st, the Phillies have been searching for one more bat off the bench, and they have finally acquired one. Left-handed hitter Matt Stairs was recently designated for assignment by the Toronto Blue Jays, and now the Phillies have acquired him for a prospect. As of now, the identity of that prospect is unknown, but it won't be a top-end guy. Stairs is 40 years old, but he still has some pop in his bat. With Geoff Jenkins out for a little while l...

Good move, let's just hope he doesn't spend much time playing in the field.

Oh well, at least Jamie has somebody to play shuffleboard with now!
  • wow of all the people they couldve gotten they pull this 40year old rabbit out of their hat, you got to be kidding me, we'll be lucky to even get into the playoffs now and if we do, i'd be very surprised if we get past the 1st rd, typical philly team move, i'm not at all surprised, you could see this cheap a55 move coming a mile away. Oh well at nleast football season is here.

Who were you expecting them to get? What other available bat is out there that is better than Stairs?

their problem is their pitching. They need a right handed reliever in the bullpen and Madson, Romero, Lidge and Condrey are starting to break down.

There have been no signs of Romero or Lidge "breaking down." Pretty stupid comment there!

In case you didn't notice Lidge was brought into a non save situation against the Mets last week and gave up some runs - not all his base runners, but didn't have his dominant stuff. He was unavailable to pitch 2 weeks ago so they could rest him. Romero hasn't blown anything yet but he did walk Fukudome to load the bases in the third game but pulled out of it nicely. In every one of those 4 games the relief staff walked a fine line and was nowhere near the dominant pen they've been all year. Sorry my comment was "stupid" as you eloquently pointed out - stupid like your comment about Jerome McDougle getting cut sends a "message" to Eagles players that they are more loyal to free agent signings than drafted talent?
