Phillies extend Lidge for 3 more years

The Phillies acquired Brad Lidge in one of the best trades in their history this past off-season, and now they have him locked up until at least 2011. Lidge, who would have been a free agent at the end of the season, signed a three year deal worth 37.5 million dollars. The deal also includes a team option for 2012.

Lidge has been basically perfect this season, converting all 19 of his save opportunities and posting an ERA of 0.77. After struggling through his last few seasons with the Astros, he has come to Philadelphia and re-established himself as an elite closer, and now he is going to get paid like one.

This is a great deal for the Phillies and for Lidge. It solidifies the back end of the bullpen for the foreseeable future. This also means that Brett Myers won't be the closer for the Phillies anytime soon, so he had better learn how to be a starting pitcher again.

I applaud the Phillies for breaking their usual mold and deciding to extend a contract during the season. Will they do the same for their other big upcoming free agent, Pat Burrell?

Great deal, I like how it's three years meaning the Phils won't be locked into him in case he starts to lose it.

I predicted a Brad Lidge extension in July before the season began- http://pabaseball.blogspot.com/2008/03/phils-predictions-pitchers.html

Good call! Will Burrell get extended now, too?

I wish, but doubt it. Burrell is destined for the AL where he'll get around 4 years 50-55 mil.

He'll make a ton, especially if he makes the All Star team.

Burrell's already said the only place for him is Philly...besides, he knows hes been overpaid for the past 4 seasons. I'd look for him to be locked up by September

I love Lidge and I'm excited he's here for a while. Now if we can only get CC! I don't think the Brewers are going to deal Matt LaPorta because they'd rather promote him next year and deal Prince Fielder, he of the Scott Boras as his agent. They'd get a kings ransom for Fielder and if this kid is as good as they say he is, not take a big hit in the offensive department. That means we could sneak in as a potential trade partner. With CC, Cole, and our bullpen, the Phils will be good for a long, long time. Even with CC, we'd still be one Randy Wolf-like pitcher away from having a great rotation though

That's a pretty hefty contract for a closer - $12.5M per year. It should have equally hefty implications for the contract that Francisco Rodriguez can expect to receive this off-season.

Actually thats right in line for a premier closer...not hefty in the least. Wagner is making $10.5 million this season, Rivera is making $15 million, and Cordero just signed a 4 year $46million deal. K Rod should be able to get 12-15/year thats it.

I think it was a good move for the phillies.

I think he deserves it! I like the Phils however I'm still a diehard yanks fan!

however lets hope he doesnt start piching bad since he has this new contract. Usually when you have a one year deal it makes some players play better for some reason i guess the reason for that is the pressure on trying to get the money for next season

Signing Lidge was a sick move. On the FA market he could have easily gotten at least 4 years at 50 mil.

very good signing... it is a good bit of money but lidge has been so great and it is definitely a great move for the Phils
