Jay Mariotti leaves Chicago Sun-Times because he feels the newspaper is "dead in the water"
Around the Horn's most despised contestant just quit his day job at the Chicago Sun-Times because of his belief that newspapers without solid internet futures are going to be swept under the rug. I completely agree with him, the future of sports writing is right here, on sites like Yardbarker or more generally on the internet where you can reach a much more diverse audience and get the information to your readers in a more timely fashion. The newspaper of today is yesterday's news, you can go online for stories any time, but on paper you have a deadline and it's usually stale content. Mariotti put it best when he said "I think newspapers that aren't competing on the Internet are dead in the water," Mariotti said, making clear that he thinks the Sun-Times is well behind the curve on the web. "If we can't compete on the net we're dead. It's a byproduct of, I think, a paper that's dying," Mariotti said. "I just cannot give my heart and soul to a newspaper when they all seem to be dying." What are your thoughts on the subject, Mariotti, paper, internet, whatever?
