Jon Heyman is reporting that the Dodgers have acquired both Jim Thome and Jon Garland in separate deals. The trades apparently were completed before the midnight deadline to make players eligible for postseason rosters. Word wasn't available as to what the Dodgers would give up in exchange for each player. Garland's name began flying around early Monday evening, with rumors that the Rockies and Yankees were both interested in the pitcher who had just cleared waivers. The Dodgers came in late and got the job done. Garland has had an up-and-down year, but has pitched well since the All-Star break. He is 4-3 in that time but hasn't allowed more than five runs in any of his ten starts since July 11. The addition of Thome is a bit more surprising. He will likely be used as late-inning power.
