SporTech Matter:
It appears the Marlins are set on stockpiling 3B talent to replace Miguel Cabrera's power. The Marlins inked Jose Castillo to a contract in December and now have inked Jorge Cantu to a deal as well to compete for the starting gig. MLB is reporting?
MLB.com has learned from a Major League Baseball Players Association source that the Marlins reached agreement on Thursday with Cantu on a one-year contract worth $500,000, plus incentives that could tack on another $100,000 based on plate appearances.
The deal is expected to be announced today. I have no problem with this deal. Why not get as many options as possible to replace one of the greatest hitters in franchise history. No sense settling on a guy like Castillo.

Bargain of the Offseason: Cantu
One month ago I brought up Jorge Cantu as a player that the Seattle Mariners should take a look at. Seattle never showed any interest in Cantu, who agreed to terms with the Florida Marlins today.
He signed for $500,000.

What to make of Dontrelle’s day
The final line isn’t at all impressive. Three walks in three innings of work. But the third inning was a clean inning, and against some good hitters in Bobby Abreu, Miguel Cabrera (who fanned), and Magglio Ordonez.
So what do you make of the day? Those 3 walks all came in the second inning, and included [...]

The National Hot Stove Edition; What to Watch For, Santana & Cabrera...
With the Hot Stove coming to a critical juncture, Major League Baseball will be holding their winter meetings in Nashville, Tennessee, and there is incredible anticipation for it this year.
The biggest topic of this year's meeting will be centered on two players – lefty ace Johan Santana of the Minnesota Twins and slugger Miguel Cabrera of the Florida Marlins. The two players...
Slow start to 2008
So it's been a slow start to 2008 for blogging. Guess I've been too busy (minor understatement). But spring is here and spring training is under way. Detroit made a splash this offseason by acquiring Dontrelle Willis and Miguel Cabrera from the Florida Marlins, a move which instantly put them as o...
Tigers Extend Cabrera
According to ESPN, the Detroit Tigers have inked “third baseman” Miguel Cabrera to an 8-year, $153 million contract extension. With the understanding that the economics of baseball are inherently insane, this strikes me as pretty darned good value.
Cabrera was my dark horse candidate for ...
Transaction Matter: Marlins Sign Jose Castillo
While no one is going to come in and replace Miguel Cabrera's offensive production, the Marlins have begun the search of finding his replacement. At this point it looks like any warm body who can somewhat play is going to get a chance. After reading about a rumor of the Marlins signing both Jose Castillo and Jorge Cantu from a reader on MB.com, I became skeptical. As of yesterday...
I Have a Mancrush on Howie Kendrick
It all started innocently enough. A few years ago, I started hearing about this kid in the Angels minor league system. I was told he was pretty handy with the woo, er...bat. A future major league batting champ, the experts told me. Teams started putting in calls to the Angels asking about Kendrick. They were waving Johan Santana, Miguel Cabrera, even pictures of GM Bill Stoneman...

Detroit's Fishing For Yet Another Florida Marlin
With Mike Rabelo among the six players that went to Florida in the Miguel Cabrera-Dontrelle Willis trade, and Vance Wilson likely out until at least Spring Training, the Detroit Tigers could be in need of a new back-up catcher. And to their possible good fortune, two notable catchers, Miguel Ol...
Opening Day!
(11:00 am PDT - Pregame warmup) Tigers and Royals are the only game going so far. Here are a few early trends I'd like to see continue: Ivan Rodriguez is 0-1 throwing out runners trying to steal, Miguel Cabrera is 0-2 at the plate and 0-1 on throws to first. One I'd like to jinx: Justin Verlander ...
Angels, Marlins At Cabrera Impasse
The Angels are a bit frustrated in the Miguel Cabrera dealings. According to Jayson Stark, they've told the Marlins to come swing by their suite whenever they're ready to give a little on their demands.
