As the "Roy Halladay sweepstakes" drag on, the question about whether to deal four or five top prospects for one player keeps coming up. The Phillies in particular seem to be playing hokey-pokey with J.A. Happ.
Is it a good idea to trade top notch prospects for a potential Hall of Famer? Well, I decided to look at history to see what it can tell us.Obviously, it is rare that a former Cy Young winner gets dealt, but it has happened often enough to give us a track record: (note that I did not include 'rent-a-player' deadline deals).
1989: The Twins trade Frank Viola to the New York Mets for Rick Aguilera, David West, Kevin Tapani, Tim Drummond and Jack Savage. Mets: Viola went 38-33 in 2 1/2 years with the Mets, winning 20 games in '90 but the Mets didn't make the playoffs in his time there.Twins: Aguilera collected 275 saves over eight seasons with the Twins, with 3 All-Star appearances
Tapani was a solid ML pitcher, going 75-73 in six seasons with the TwinsThe others didn't amount t...

Boston and Roy Halladay
Theirs been a handful of reports linking Roy Halladay to the Red Sox. Supposedly they've already made a strong offer and some have called them the favorites. I'm here to tell you, don't worry. I hate to disagree with Greg but if Boston were to get Roy Halladay it isn't a reason a reason to panic and in the long run it may even be a good thing.First of all, this is no knock on Roy...
Griffey and Mariners down Halladay and the Jays
Today, the Mariners were heading into the game against the Blue Jays still trying to get back to playing “Wak Ball”.
They came into the game 7.5 games back of the division leading Angels, and were trying to pickup a game against the best pitcher in the league in Roy Halladay.
The Mariners did a good [...]
For his sake, Ricciardi better be bluffing
J.P. Ricciardi better be bluffing about not trading Roy Halladay. And he better hope this play works, says Michael Rosenberg.
Trade deadline unspectacular (and also spectacular)
It’s July 28 and do you know where your Roy Halladay is?
I’m sure some people are convinced he got traded to St. Louis last week, just as some are mourning the departure of Andy LaRoche in Pittsburgh. So it goes. For Red Sox fans, it’s nice not to have to deal with trade deadline madness this year. When it happened with Nomar, it was 2004 and blogs were still this weird thing...
One Fan's Opinion: The Yankees Should NOT Trade For Roy Halladay
Roy Halladay is 11-4 this year with 128 strikeouts and an ERA of 2.68.
The New York Yankees currently sit in first place in the AL East with a record of 62-39 and a 3 1/2 game lead over the Boston Red Sox.
This sounds like a match made in heaven right? Well I'm here to tell you that I DO NOT want Roy Halladay.
I am a huge Yankee fan, and Roy Halladay is a stud pitcher. How you may...
Red Sox Offer Impressive Package for Halladay
The Red Sox have offered Clay Buchholz, Michael Bowden, and Ryan Westmoreland for Roy Halladay according to Gordon Edes of Yahoo Sports. With an offer like that it seems like the Sox have a legit shot at landing Halladay. Say all you want about the Sox needing a bat, with Beckett, Lester, and Halladay in the rotation the team could cruise into the postseason and then they would...
BDD: Ricciardi Has No Leverage
At Baseball Daily Digest, I use some logic to deduce the Phillies as the only logical landing spot for Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.
Comparatively, the Jays turned down the Phillies’ counter-offer of Carlos Carrasco, Jason Donald, Michael Taylor, and J.A. Happ, the #2, 4, 6, and 9 prospects according to BA. That offer was fair [...]
Trade watch: Theo 'burning midnight oil'
Tom Werner says that Theo Epstein is "burning the midnight oil" for an impact trade. The article specifically mentions Roy Halladay and Victor Martinez. Is there no middle ground for Victor Martinez? As NESN.com rounds up, the Indians reportedly rejected a Victor Martinez-Clay Buchholz swap, and a later Justin Masterson, Michael Bowden and outfield prospect package. The...
Longtime Blue Jays Fan To Management: Your Product Just Plain Sucks
I have been a Toronto Blue Jays fan since I was a boy. I have been to hundreds of games over the course of my life and stuck by the team through the best and worst of times.
Of all those years I have to say that the worst of times is right now.
The yahoos at the helm of both the team and the Rogers Centre are running the whole experience of a day at the ballpark into the ground....

A Letter from the National League to the American League
Dear American League,
Well, it's been a little more than a month and I still haven't heard back from you since I wrote to you before the All-Star break.
That's cool, I've been busy too...
Congrats on winning the All-Star game by the way. I still can't believe Crawford made that catch.
Okay, seriously, American League, why do you have to do this to me...
