Ryan blows another save. Is a big $$$ Closer contract worth it?

TEAMS: Toronto Blue Jays
PLAYERS: BJ Ryan

Is their really a reason to spend $10+ million on a closer when you can get a marginally (3% - 4% Save conversion rate) poorer closer at a 50%+ discount?

Billy Beane had the best strategy with closers. Buy them cheap, hope they have huge years and then, not only not pay them, but get something in return for them. That's how he flipped Billy Koch and Keith Foulke after monster years.
