As The Santana Turns
Things have been quiet on the Red Sox front as far as their role in the Johan Santana trade talks with the Twins go. However, it seems as though the Yankees may have upped the ante in their pursuit of the Venezuelan.
Jon Lester Wins Tony C. Award
Boston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester was awarded the Tony Conigliaro Award, presented annually to a major league player who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage.
Price For Santana Too High For Yanks
George King and Joel Sherman of the New York Post report that the initial asking price for Johan Santana is higher than they wished to pay. The Post writes the following :
Mets Willing To Trade Reyes For Johan?
I'm in favor of any deal that prevents the picture below from becoming a reality.
Worst. Trade. Ever.
Absolutely ridiculous proposed trade from Twins beat writer -- basically asking the Red Sox to give all of their stars under the age of 25 for Santana, Nathan and a player who's actually a free agent. Where do these people come from?
Mets trade for Santana
That turned out to be the case, though, when the Mets GM capped off the worst day in his career by being duped by the Minnesota Twins into trading Jose Reyes and Phillip Humber to the Twins for a 24-year-old Single-A pitcher named John Santana.
Upheaval In The Hughes Corporation?
The Yankees are now willing to include Phil Hughes in a trade for Johan Santana.I guess I haven't been paying close enough attention, because I thought Hughes was already included. Can you blame me? All this media speculation was bound to confuse someone out there. Might as well be me.

I will gladly admit my bias in terms of baseball philosophy...
Should the Yankees give up Hughes?
Should the Yankees give up prized rookie Phil Hughes to get Johan Santana? It's no surprise to me if it is indeed the Yankees who crack and give Twins GM Bill Smith what he wants. The Red Sox already have Josh Beckett and have won two of the last four World Series. Santana would be nice, but Boston can win again next year without him. The Yankees need an ace to get back on top.
Delmon Young/Matt Garza Trade Discussion
Could this finally be "The Year of the Ray"? In this post from FIO's Free For All writers' blog, staff writer Tim Hays discusses how the addition of another young arm to a rotation could help put Tampa Bay into the mix in the AL East this coming season. Sure, they lost a five-star stud, but the Devil Rays woes have always centered around pitching - now if only they could get that...
Off to Vegas
I have a marathon to run this Sunday, and then I am testing my poker skills at the MGM Grand through Thursday this week. Thus far my tournament finishes (with # of participants) are 3rd (60), 3rd (70), 75th (150), 17th (150). Unfortunately, the money I won in the first two tourneys only paid for my participation in the 3rd and 4th.This means I will not be blogging for a while...
