Should the Cubs make a Run at Sheffield?

It's recently been released that the New York Yankees will be picking up the 13 million option on Gary Sheffield but they don't plan on keeping him. Instead they're looking to make a deal for an arm or two (one being a quality pen arm) and/or key bench players. Before I go any further, it should be well known that Sheffield is termed a "clubhouse cancer" and a primadonna that makes Sosa look like a team player. Yet Gary does have a quality power/contact stick with low K numbers and a good walk rate something we're in pursuit over. At 38 years old, it's a good bet that Sheff won't play a full schedule. Still the Cubs need a bat like Sheffield's, the problem is finding him a position.

Sheffield was far from a cancer in NYC. Prior to the injury this year, he averaged 35 HRs and 120 RBI in two seasons with the Yankees. He's an intimdator in the middle of the lineup. He is better than Murton or Jones and the Cubs would be lucky to land him. Question is that they probably have more important problems to fix than corner outfield spots.

Yeah I think Sheffield has dropped that 'clubhouse cancer' label somewhat. I don't think teams have much to lose by going after Sheffield. $5 million of that option is deferred money that a new team won't have to pay and the yankees probably won't be looking for all that much in return. If the Cubs lose Ramirez, they are going to be begging for a middle of the order run producer like Sheffield.

The Cubs are about 72 hours away from reaching a deal with Ramirez for 52 million/ 4 years plus options. A great value, especially in this poor free agency market. But even still, we need to add another quality bat and the easiest position to find one of those is at a corner OF spot.

Depending on what the Yanks want in return, which I've heard is a pen arm, a young starter and/or a quality bench player, I'd love to see the Cubs work a deal. The money isn't important to a team like the Cubs, we'd take the money that Gary's due this year along with his deferred payments just as long as we didn't have to give up any prospect/player of serious quality.

In a Yankee suit it's hard to be cancer, that's not a "dis" to Yanks fans but rather a burn at Cubs fans who have an arrogance towards adding a player with a "me first" attitude since Sammy Sosa. Despite Sheff's limited 2006 numbers, he is still a threat in the lineup. In a one year stretch he's still a better offensive threat than either Murton or Jones, but over two years (or more) than it's a push at best. And outside of an offensive corner threat, the Cubs don't have a more important question. They have other questions, mainly in a #3 and/or #4 starter but adding power and legitimacy to the lineup is the utmost importance.
