Hayden Penn out of the Baltimore Organization; Andino an Oriole...

The big news from yesterday -- perhaps minor in the wide of scheme of things -- is that formerly prized prospect, Hayden Penn was traded to the Florida Marlins for infielder Robert Andino. What's the big deal with Andino? Not much. He's simply a nice, slick fielding fielder who's your typical 'all glove, no bat' type of guy. Obviously with Hanley Ramirez at shortstop...

Bad News, Everyone: Farnsworth Ruins Royals Opener

The Kansas City Royals - popular darkhorse picks among those who think last year’s stunning Rays run will lead to more crap teams rising out of nowhere - looked like they were on their way to a season-opening win over the division rival Chicago White Sox…and then Kyle Farnsworth happened.  The erratic reliever, signed this [...]

Guthrie Lit Up, Is He Hurt, Etc.?

The Baltimore Orioles got shelled by the Florida Marlins, 12-2, and the big concern heading into Monday is that status of starting pitcher, Jeremy Guthrie. Right now, the results out of the exhibition season and the World Baseball Classic for the team ace has not been good. Guthrie only lasted four innings, and gave up eight runs -- all earned -- on ten hits. I watched the game on...

Projecting the 2009 Cubs: the final one

For these team projections I've used the playing time projections that we put together. The pitching stats (FIP) are the average of those same 4 projection systems. The defense for most of the players was a 3-year weighted UZR average...

Season Previews: Chicago White Sox

Now that the season is under way, it's time for one of our favorite things in all the world: Season Previews. Two years ago, they began as a serious analysis and ended up as half-assed haiku. We're just gonna go with what we know. We're pretty much gonna plow through our preview of the American League Central today, so try to keep up ladies. The Chicago White Sox:

So what if Neal Cotts is the only LOOGY?

There’s been some discussion this offseason and this spring about who the Cubs LOOGY will be. We’ve had the discussions on here. I was hopeful the Cubs would acquire one of Beimel, Shouse or Ohman in the offseason. Neal Cotts isn’t that good a pitcher and you could probably improve over him. That being said, we’re talking about 50 or so innings of work...

Red Sox and Penny Finalize Deal

Brad Penny and the Boston Red Sox finalized a deal Friday which will have Penny in Boston for 1-year, giving him $5-million. Last season was Penny's worst ever. Nevertheless, the BoSox were able to look past Penny's unusual and disappointing performance and knew...
