Somebody Explain Why DeWitt Was Called Up

Because I am having trouble understanding it.

"The Dodgers promoted infielder Blake DeWitt from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday to replace utility man Doug Mientkiewicz, who dislocated his right shoulder with a head-first dive Thursday night and will undergo reconstructive surgery Monday.

DeWitt returns to the Dodgers after being optioned to Albuquerque on Monday because the club wanted him to play every day and not sit on the bench in Los Angeles. Now he will sit on the bench in Los Angeles, although he should get the pinch-hitting opportunities that had gone to Mientkiewicz, whose primary responsibility was being the left-handed pinch-hitter.

The decision wasn't made until Friday, as the staff apparently was split -- with some preferring to promote outfielder Xavier Paul, who is hitting .571 at Triple-A."

I'm not even going to bother crying about Delwyn not being here anymore, but why DeWitt?

I thought the whole point of sending him down was to get him regular playing time? Is he going to get it now? If not, why make this move?

As it currently stands, the Dodgers only have 4 outfielders on the roster and they just lost a left-handed pinch-hitter. Paul is a lefty that plays all 3 outfield positions and is currently carrying an OPS eleventy billion in AAA.

Come on.
