The Dodgers had a few things to be frustrated with today as they blew a beautiful game by John Ely. The opposing starter was just as dominate as Ely. But did he have an unfair advantage? Casey Blake who had two hits off of Cubs starter Ted Lilly, felt he was cheating. After a sixth inning single, Blake exchanged words with first-base umpire John Hirschbeck to the verge of ejection and was still hot after the game. What was Blake so worked up about? He accused Lilly of pitching from in front of the rubber. “I know the guy doesn’t have the fastest fastball and he’s trying to get any edge he can, but the guy is just cheating,” said Blake. “John wouldn’t at least tell him to get on the rubber or move to get a better look at it. That’s what made me mad.” Hirschbeck said he “couldn’t tell” if Lilly was in contact with the rubber, but couldn’t leave his position to get a better look. “It’s a ...

Dodgers John Ely makes $400K but can’t afford to buy game tickets?

Los Angeles Dodgers John Ely was born and raised in the Chicago area and is making his first hometown major start on Thursday at Wrigley Field. Despite growing up in the area, he was a White Sox fan, so he will not have any emotional conflict in today’s game. “I had no other choice,” he said. “My dad would have disowned me if I was a Cubs fan.” Despite...

Cubs Top Tough-Luck John Ely 1-0

The Dodgers were shut out for the second time in the series after Chicago squeezed out a 1-0 win in the final game. Former Dodgers left-hander Ted Lilly allowed three hits to beat John Ely, who deserved a much better fate. Rookie outfielder Xavier Paul popped out with the bases loaded and had two extra base hits skid past him in the eighth to score the only run of the game.

Dodgers Give it to Cubs on the Chin; Power Outage Delays Game

Los Angeles Dodger third baseman Casey Blake’s beard had became part of his persona. Like Samson’s hair, Casey’s productivity appeared to be tied to his facial hair. In 2009, he hit .280, fourteen points over his career average. Then this spring, Casey came in clean shaven. After a decent April in which Blake hit .276, he went into a slump and by mid-May his average fell to...

Wrapping Up: Thursday’s starting highs and lows

CPR’s wrap up of the day’s most useful fantasy news from the diamonds of the Majors. It was a pitcher heavy night of notes. Let’s get to them. Right now! Pitching Pulse - Nick Blackburn improved to possibly the most improbable 6-1 start of any major league pitcher this year, going seven strong innings against the Yankees at Target Field. As you might imagine though...

Fantasy Baseball Two Start Pitchers, Week 9

The Strasburg watch has gone into DEFCON 3. Every expert who calls themselves one, knows the date he is coming up and who he will face and how he will throw exactly 85 pitches with 75 of them being fastballs. Enough already, all this speculation is annoying. He is owned in almost 85% of those leagues(with the exception of leagues where you can’t use minor leaguers). When he comes...

More than a Lil' crafty

By the time the game was over Thursday, the Cubs had an infielder who couldn't see out of his right eye (Jeff Baker), a big-money setup man in the hospital with a stomachache (Carlos Zambrano) and a starting pitcher who didn't seem to know exactly where he was standing during much of his start (Ted Lilly).
