Hard to believe the end of the season is already here. Seems like yesterday we all gathered down in Peoria, AZ for the start of spring training. Lots of surprises since, including the M's trying to notch their 85th win of the season today. For me, the highlight of the season would have to be a pair of walkoff hits, one a single by Ken Griffey Jr. against the White Sox in that 14-inning game back in August, and then Ichiro hitting that two-run homer off Mariano Rivera and the Yankees a couple of weeks ago. Neither mattered much in the overall scheme of the playoff race, since the Mariners had pretty much fallen out of it by then. Early on, there was the 15-inning victory by the Mariners over Oakland. Also, that season-opening road trip to Minneapolis and Oakland that pretty much set the tone for the 155 games to follow. There was the heartbreak of blowing those two saves in Texas early on, then that meltdown in an attempted series sweep in Anaheim in late-May. We saw players arrive...

What happened to Ken Griffey Jr. post-game

All season long, Ken Griffey Jr. has been the initiator of clubhouse pranks and torments on other players. It was all in good fun, but still, there are many in that room who relish the chance for a little payback. They got it tonight, courtesy of Mike Sweeney, Jay Buhner, Russell Branyan and some others. It all began when Sweeney held a pre-game meeting of his L. Ben Show members...

A gift from Ken Griffey Jr. to Dave Niehaus, circa 1991

One of our regulars wrote to me on our Facebook site last night, asking about a first inning event in which Ken Griffey Jr. actually left the dugout (with permission) and headed upstairs to present broadcaster Dave Niehaus with a little on-air gift. Having players up in the booth during games is interesting enough. But this reader wanted to know whether I'd seen the photo and...

The AP has a few notes on free agent DH Ken Griffey Jr.  The report says Junior earned $3.15MM in total this year - a $2MM base plus $1.15MM in incentives for playing time and team attendance.  The Mariners kindly played Griffey often in the season's final week, causing him to earn an additional $250K.  As for 2010, Griffey will talk to his family and decide within a few weeks...

Saying goodbye to the 2009 season

Lots of goodbyes going on here today, one of which came from Ken Griffey Jr. after being lifted for a pinch-runner following his eighth-inning single. Turns out, that post-game "victory lap'' taken by the Mariners, when they saluted the fans, shook their hands and even hugged some of them, was all a spontaneous gesture thought up by Mike Sweeney down on the field. Felix Hernandez...

The Final Chapter? Griffey gets hero's tribute on season's last day

When I wrote about giving Ken Griffey the sendoff he deserved, Sunday's scene at Safeco Field was exactly what I imagined. Junior received a standing ovation before every at-bat, applause when he was pulled from the game after a single in the eighth and off-the-field transport from his teammates once the Mariners sealed a 4-3 win over Texas. Griffey responded with a few tips of the...
