Well, after watching the Mets and Yankee's bullpens blow leads against their respective arch rivals, it became obvious to me that both teams (especially the Yankees) need upgrades in their bullpen if they are serious about competing in 2009. The Mets and Yankees are not alone. Come July, there will be a number of teams clamoring to acquire the few quality relief pitchers that can be had on the open market. So who could/should be available? Let's take a look at 5 guys, who could help out a number of contenders in the near future. Joe Beimel, LHP, Nationals: At this point in the season, Beimel must be shaking his head. He was hoping for a lucrative, long term contract on the open market last offseason, but instead, Beimel wound up in Washington. While I liked the signing at the time, the move clearly has not impacted the Nationals, who currently have the worst record in baseball. Kearns: on the outs?
Time seems to be running out for Austin Kearns...
Is the Austin Kearns Era in D.C. finally nearing its end? Manny Acta indicated that Kearns will get a crapload of playing time over the next six interleague games in AL Parks (with Dunn safely installed as DH) in hope that he can break out of the 2+ year, ~1000 AB slump he's been mired in since the midpoint of his...
Nationals to Fire Acta
FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Nationals will fire manager Manny Acta and replace him with bench coach Jim Riggleman. Acta has been with the team since the 2007 season, and has done a fairly good job despite poor records. Third baseman Ryan Zimmerman is having a breakout year for the Nationals, hitting .315 with 11 home runs and a .391 on-base percentage...

The San Diego State pitcher, taken by the Nationals with the No. 1 pick in Tuesday's MLB draft, conducted a conference call along with his adviser, Scott Boras, on Wednesday morning and indicated he's expecting to work out and...

A brief history of SDSU athletes on draft day
Yesterday, the Washington Nationals shocked no one by taking phenom Stephen Strasburg with the first pick of the 2009 MLB Draft.
Perhaps what might be more shocking to learn is that prior to the Aztec hurler being taken first, no other San Diego State alum had been selected with the top pick in a draft for [...]
Dukes' past has passed
Two years after his off-field problems erupted into a polarizing public spectacle, Washington Nationals outfielder Elijah Dukes made his homecoming Friday night, arriving to a chorus of boos at Tropicana Field and displaying the tantalizing talent that once made him the Rays' top prospect.
