Indians Place Dellucci on DL; Recall Crowe from Columbus With just one week until they open up against the Rangers in Texas, the Cleveland Indians tweaked their opening day roster once again to make sure that it is just right. Their basic moves are that they placed outfielder David Dellucci on the 15-day disabled list where he will be until the middle of April. To fill his spot on the roster, the Indians recalled outfielder Trevor Crowe from their AAA affiliate, the Columbus Clippers of the International League. Image via Wikipedia Crowe has been the doll of the Indians’ farm system for some time now and they even made a few different attempts at altering his position to see if it would bring him to the majors at a faster pace due to the team’s immediate needs. For a while when he was with the team’s AA affiliate, the Akron Aeros, he was attempting to learn second base and even took practice doing double plays for basically a straight mo...

The 2009 baseball season is upon us, and it's time for some thoughts on the 6 months of summer action to come. Can the Rays compete in the 2009 AL East? (Photo: Brian Cassella)Most interesting pennant race: AL East. Typically the traditional Red Sox vs. Yankees slugfest, the emergence of the Rays last year left the Yankees out of the playoffs. Can a retooled Yankees team (Teixeira...

Settle Down - It Was Just One Game

Okay, Cliff Lee looked like crap, the offense did nothing off a former Indian, and as usual, the sky is falling after one loss. Settle down folks. Indians fans should be use to losing the first game of the season, it’s happened 7 of the last 11 seasons. Deal with it. The bigger [...]

Game #1: Can We Start Over?

Wow. Well, you kind of had that feeling that Cliff Lee was going to have one of those days today after he won 22 games in 2008. No one though probably thought 2009 for Lee and the Tribe would start out as ugly as it did today. The team was shelled by [...]

Indians Set 2009 Opening Day Roster

The Cleveland Indians today set their opening day roster for the start of the 2009 Championship Season. The roster contains twelve (12) pitchers, two (2) catchers, seven (7) infielders and four (4) outfielders. There are two Indians currently on the disabled list (OF David Dellucci, RHP Jake Westbrook). The current roster contains two [...]

Don't worry, Cleveland Indians fans: The charts say Cliff Lee can rebound

Chuck Crow/The Plain DealerCliff Lee The last two Cy Young Award winners bombed in their Opening Day outings. New York Yankees pitcher CC Sabathia and Cleveland Indians pitcher Cliff Lee threw batting practice in their openers. We're not sure...

Padres Drop Opener To Dodgers

The San Diego Padres dropped an opening day decision to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 and about all I can think to say about it is that the food was good and that Jake looked like he was pressing in the first inning.Look, we all know that expectations for the Friars are pretty low this year. (Those who claim they are at an all-time low have conveniently forgotten the 1970's.)But...

Cubs Close 2009 Cactus League Season with 9th Inning Win

Andres Blanco looped a single over the third-baseman's head to score Reed Johnson from second with one out in the bottom of the 9th, as the Cubs squandered an early 7-1 lead only to come back and defeat the Cleveland Indians 9-8 before a sparse crowd on Spring Training "getaway day" at Ho Ho Kam Park this afternoon in Mesa.   box score Ryan Dempster...

What to expect?

The Indians are an ambiguous team as the 2009 season dawns. In years past, we'd be able to get an idea of whether the Indians would excel in the rotation, in the bullpen or in the batting lineup. This year, it's kind of difficult to gauge what, exactly, we should expect of this team. Mark Shapiro's moves this offseason, Travis Hafner's lingering production problems...

Indians Scrapbook: Opening Day 1993

Cliff Lee gave up seven runs during the season opener on Monday against a powerful Rangers lineup. That was not overly surprising given his career 7.09 ERA against the Texas sluggers, but it was still hard to accept the fact that the Tribe ace was knocked around so much after such a stellar season a year ago. He didn’t give up seven runs in one start all of last season, and...

110 Losses, Here We Come!

Padres opening days are nothing if not classy. When we think Padres baseball, we think first-class all the way.The day began as Padres openers always do -- with the dignified tradition of a tuxedoed Ted Leitner doing a poor man's version of Michael Buffer. After the 20-minute pregame ceremony -- which seemed more like 20 hours -- the impression it left with us was: Leitner is...

Jamey Carroll to DL, Graffanino Up

Hours before the Indians open up the 2009 season, news broke of Jamey Carroll going to the 15-day DL. He was hit on the hand by a Doug Brocail pitch in the ninth inning of Saturday’s exhibition at Minute Maid Park versus the Astros, but was said to be ok by manager Eric Wedge following the game.

Series Preview: Indians at Texas Rangers

MLB Daily Six Pack 4/8

1. Nice start for Josh Beckett This season hasn’t gone the way of the ace so far, with CC Sabathia, Cliff Lee, Justin Verlander and Tim Lincecum all struggling for their respective teams. But one No. 1 that didn’t struggle in his ’09 debut was Boston’s Josh Beckett, who fanned 10 in the BoSox’s 5-3 victory [...]

Rotation in Question; Tribe Starting Five Has a Lot to Prove

Two days away from opening day, and per usual there are more questions than answers about the 2009 Indians. One thing we do know is the starting rotatio: 1. LHP Cliff Lee 2. RHP Fausto Carmona 3. RHP Carl Pavano 4. LHP Scott Lewis 5. RHP Anthony Reyes Now 1-2 and are just fine in my eyes, as I can [...]
