I had thought of something to write about these meetings and then realized I didn’t really care. Nothing will happen that wouldn’t have happened without the meetings. We’ll hear a few rumors over the next few days and read about how the GM Meetings lay the groundwork for trades that take place weeks later or don’t even take place at all. I’m pretty sure the GMs can lay the groundwork for trades without being in the same location. I’m not really sure why this is even a big deal. Free agents aren’t yet able to negotiate with any team other than their own, the economy sucks, and the Cubs have little to no money to spend. To make things worse, they appear intent on making the 2010 team suck as much as possible. Bradley will be traded for garbage unless you happen to believe that Bruce Miles is on to something when he brings up the possibility of trading Bradley and prospects for Halladay. Nonsense. Maybe Bradley, prospects (Castro, Vitters, Cashner) for Halladay AND Vernon Wells. I’m not even sure why this was written since there is literally no way on earth that the Jays would trade Halladay for Bradley and prospects. In the end, the Cubs will trade Bradley for someone like Aaron Rowand who the fans will offer to give free blow jobs to at the Cubs Conference in January. They might end up signing Mike Cameron who will be called racist names the first time he strikes out 4 times. The fans will say it did not happen and that they haven’t heard anything like that. The media will say the same thing. Cameron will be further disliked and then some douchebag will throw **** at him after his next 4 strikeout game. The media and the fans will blame Cameron for all of this. We’ve seen Cubs fans and the beat writers do this far too many times, but it will happen with the very next black player that the Cubs sign who gets off to a bad start. It will happen. You’re either blind, crazy or stupid if you think otherwise. The Cubs might get a middle infielder, but probably won’t. They might look for a leadoff hitter, but probably won’t get one. They should re-sign Rich Harden, but won’t even offer him arbitration, which is just plain stupid. Since they won’t re-sign Harden, they should sign another top of the rotation pitcher, but won’t. They’ll wait for Lilly who will undoubtedly have a setback and won’t return for longer than expected. Then he’ll be worse than expected because of the surgery. Zambrano will be criticized this offseason for things that don’t sense by people who shouldn’t be allowed to reproduce. The Cubs will probably even try to trade Zambrano, but won’t get as much as they’d demand in a trade. It appears the Cubs won’t re-sign Reed Johnson, which is bad because he was apparently the team leader in 2008. I thought that guy was DeRosa, but it’s somehow become Reed Johnson over the last few weeks. Anyway, that’s your preview for these meaningless meetings. If you have a problem with this big and mostly unreadable paragraph then go **** yourself.

Marlon Byrd or Mike Cameron for CF?

Ken Rosenthal adds a bit more about the Cubs: Byrd likely to be targeted by Cubs — 6:10 p.m. Once the Cubs trade Milton Bradley, their plan is to find a center fielder and move Kosuke Fukudome back to right field. Free agent Marlon Byrd is certain to draw their interest. Rudy Jaramillo, the Cubs’ new hitting coach, is a huge fan of Byrd’s from their three seasons...

Horrible Crash

Man. That is one of the ugliest things I've ever seen. If you haven't seen or heard about it, Carlos Beltran and Mike Cameron were both going full speed for a ball hit in shallow right-center field. Both dove head first for the ball.....and they ended up head-first into each other. Beltran eventually got up, a little woozy, and would leave the game later with a sore...

Read: Mike Cameron is a better option than Bay

Dave Cameron of Fan Graphs looks through a variety of statistics, and concludes, “If you want a right-handed hitting outfielder this winter, and you don’t want to pony up for Matt Holliday, Jason Bay is not the alternative.  Call Mike Cameron instead.” In his recent Hot Stove preview for MLB.com, Marty Noble listed [...]

A team insider suggests to Adam Rubin of the New York Daily News that Jason Bay and Matt Holliday may be too expensive for the Mets to consider. Rubin hears that the Mets expect to trade for a left fielder or spend on a second-tier free agent, since the top outfielders on the free agent market may be too pricey.A source close to Mike Cameron tells Rubin that the one-time Met wouldn...

75 to 88 Wins in 2 Simple Steps

It's easier than you might think. Step 1: Do NothingThe Jays won 75 games last year, but Pythagoras suggests they should have won 83 (actually, 83.5 to be more precise). The only significant non-random factor that affects a team's deviation from its Pythagorean record is the strength of its late-inning relievers. While the Jays don't have an elite closer like Rivera,...
