The Philadelphia Wife Beaters

I do not intend the title of this blog to offend anybody, but it's now apparent that the Phillies really don't care about a player's character off the field as much as they care about their talent between the chalk lines. In a near deadline deal the team-acquired Relief pitcher Julio Mateo from the Seattle Mariners for Double-A infielder Jesus Merchan.

There is no doubting Mateo's talent; he is 3-1 with a 0.79 ERA, 29 strikeouts and two walks in 34 1/3 innings at AAA Tacoma, and 18-12 with a 3.75 ERA in 219 major-league games. However, Mateo was charged with third-degree assault in May after police said that he struck and bit his wife in a Manhattan hotel room. The Mariners then suspended Mateo for 10 days without pay for missing a game without permission the day after he was arrested, and optioned him the minors.

As you might recall, last year the Phillies and their management were criticized for starting pitcher Brett Myers against the Red Sox just one day after being arrested for beating his wife in public on the streets of Boston. Myers wife then had a change of heart and did not press charges.

Maybe they can help console each other while waiting out in the bullpen together in the City of Brotherly Love? It's sure not the City of Spousal Love now.

As a side note Phils GM Pat Gilick has now made another deal with the Seattle, his former team, and continues to only deal with the Mariners and the White Sox. Earlier this week Gilick acquired second baseman Tadahito Iguchi from Chicago after Chase Utley went down. He also dealt for Freddy Garcia in the off-season, whose both a former Mariner and White Sock, and signed Greg Dobbs as a free agent who was a Mariner in 2006. Last season at the deadline Gilick traded for veteran starter Jamie Moyer who was in Seattle, and also traded for Aaron Rowand a White Sox outfielder in the off-season. Someone please tell him that there are other teams in the Majors besides the ones who reside in these two cities.

It does make one wonder what GMs think.

This Blog was just read live on the air as winner of "Jody Mac's Sports Radio 950am email of the day". Just wanted to pat myself on the back....

I wonder if guys brought their wives' to the Phillies facilities in protest. Just like people brought their dogs to the Falcons camp in protest of Michael Vick.
