The Phillies get their arm: Joe Blanton

After the Brewers and Cubs made major moves to bolster their rotations, you knew it was only a matter of time before the Phillies responded. While the Phils weren't able to pick up a top line starter, they were able to acquire Joe Blanton, a serviceable pitcher, from the Oakland Athletics. The Phillies gave up three prospects in the deal: infielder Adrian Cardenas, pitcher Josh Outman and outfielder Matt Spencer.

Blanton has been below average this year, accumulating a 5-12 record and sporting an ERA of 4.96. He was much better last year when his ERA was below 4, so the Phillies are hoping a change of scenery can help him return to form. Blanton is more of a number 3 starter than the top flight starter the Phils hoped to acquire, but he is an innings eater and he will be a big upgrade over Adam Eaton, who looks to have lost his spot in the rotation with Brett Myers returning next week.

While the Phillies were able to hold on to their best prospect, Carlos Carrasco, A's GM Billy Beane always seems to come out on the better end of these deals. Cardenas has the most upside of these players and Outman was seen as a possible option for the rotation down the road. That's a pretty big price to pay for a pitcher having a terrible year but it was one the Phillies thought they had to make to go for it all.

On the surface, it looks like the Phillies gave up way too much for a slightly above average pitcher, but if Brett Myers can come back and be the number 2 starter we all thought he could be and Joe Blanton assumes the number 3 role, then the rotation might actually round into something pretty good. That's a big "if", though. Blanton is under contract until 2010, so we will have plenty of time to find out if he is worth the price the Phillies paid.

So the question remains...will Eaton or Myers accept a bullpen role? I like this trade for several reasons. First, Blanton is a discount compared to Bedard/Burnett and he is signed for a couple years to come. The guy is an inning eater (127 innings pitched this year) which will give our bullpen some much needed rest and keep them fresh for the playoff run. Ignore is 5-12 record and 4.96 ERA, they are misleading. He has a 3.87 in 17 of his 20 starts and has the 7th lowest run support in the AL.
While is always sucks to give up young prospects, things could have been much worse. Golson, Marson, and Carrasco all still remain and thank god for that. Cardenas was a great looking player, but lets face it, his path to the bigs would have been blocked for years with Utley/Rollins, plus I like Donald better. Outman could be a stud, but Savery, Carrasco, Drabek, Bisenius, Happ and others still remain so plenty of hope left for our young pitchers.

the era and starts arent that misleading, all you did to get that era is subtract his worst 3 starts. if you subtract his best 3 the era gets even higher. Now he does have 8 quality starts in 20 starts, but on the other hand he's given up 5 or more runs in 6 of his 20 starts.

It's still better to Eaton WHEN Blanton is pitching well. The concern thou is leaving Oakland, some will argue playing in the NL will make him better not so. He leaves the stadium with the most foul territory, a notorious pitchers park, for one of the highest scoring ballparks in the league. And his splits? 4.63 era at home, 5.73 on the road, and thats right in line with his career numbers a full run worse outside of Oakland.

The Phillies bats will need to be high scoring on a majority of his starts, at least they control him for a few years thou.

He also pitched in the AL and most pitchers fair a little better when switching leagues...unless your name is Barry Zito. And I'll take his ERA for 85% of his starts and throw the 3 bad games out the window. Every pitcher is going to have a bad game or 3. Lidge would still have a 0.00 ERA if he didn't have below par performance or 2...it happens. Blanton owns the Mets in his 2 starts against them. 1-0 0 runs 8 hits 9 K's 1 BB in 15 innings pitched.
And how is Cain any better besides the fact that he is 4 years younger? Both are signed through 2011 I believe and are pretty cheap. Cain hasn't exactly been overly impressive this year and looked awful against the Mets. Who knows what SF wanted in return for him, it was probably Golson or Carrasco and if that was the case then the right move was made.

i could go on for a while how cain is better then blanton. this could wind up a good deal, but blanton has to be better then the average starter he's been throughout most of his career, and definitely cut down on the more then 1 hit per inning, at the bank those type of numbers get a pitcher killed.

Cain got shelled against the Mets and Marlins this year though in case you missed those starts. SF probably wanted too much for him, so we get a guy of about the same caliber and don't deplete our farm system.

lol against the mets yea, the marlins ummm no 2 runs 6 innings? the giants probably did more want more, but they gave up a lot in this deal too. we'll see how it turns out thou. i'd of preferred cain the whole product is a lot more impressive then a start against the mets

Good call, I must have been looking at the CWS game in his next start. He still can't pitch against the Mets though...check out his 2 starts in 2007.

I don't really think they gave up much at all in this one. Cardenas is great and will be a big leaguer soon enough...but theres no room for him in the near future in Philly. Outman could be decent, but Carrasco and Savery would have been bigger losses.

Maybe you guys are missing the fact that the Phillies still have Brett Myers and Carrasco! Teams want Myers as a closer, and other teams that are rebuilding will definately want Carrasco. The fact is the Phillies still have a great amount of trade bait left before the deadline. I think its still possible to get a decent pitcher, or another hitter to add to the rotation.

To be honest i wouldnt mind getting rid of every prospect we have for a winning year!!!!!

and This trade wasnt a bad trade, it just wasnt agood one. It was fair.

I'm sure you thought the same thing about Lohse last year didnt you? And please provide some sources on teams wanting Myers as a closer because I certainly have not seen any of them floating around. That being said who cares about much trade bait they have...what pitcher that isnt named Bedard/Burnett/Wolf is on the market? Fact of the matter is we got the best guy that was available, don't expect anything else or you may be disappointed.

they had a chance for Matt Cain, i'd say he was better then Blanton

No one wants Myers right now, and his trade value is the lowest it's ever been. I think they have one more move in them to acquire a decent bat for the bench, but nothing major.

I know I was listening to 610WIP this morning, so maybe im a little more optimistic then you guys. But they had my man on talkin about myers. .Everyone right now is after the Closer from collorado (Fuentes). only one team is going to get (Fuentes) so the other teams are no doubt going to go after Brett Myers.. ( make sense?)

so yeah, im Wrong ( no one right this second is going after brett myers ) but Fuentes is going to get taken up, and then we ll see what happens how about that.

No we definately didnt get the best guy available. Bedard would be a great land in philadelphia.

Bedard would have cost twice as much and would most likely be a 1 year rental. His numbers are not much better than Blanton's and is another lefty. Having too many lefties on a staff can help in some cases, but most likely hurts you in a playoff series depending who you're matched up with. Bedard averages around 5 innings per outting....he would single handedly kill our bullpen.
As for Fuentes...teams do not want him to be a closer. They want him to be a dominating set up man. Of the 10 teams who have reported interest in him, only St. Louis and Oakland could use an upgrade at the closer positon. NYY, NYM, Bos, Cubs, LAA, TB, FLA, and our Phils all have excellent closers. So no, it really does not make sense...it just wishful thinking on your part.

what is going to happen to a.j. happ when myers comes back their would be no more room in the rotation and i thought he did a pretty good his past few starts

Where have you been? J.A. Happ...not A.J. was sent back to LV where he threw 7 innings of no hit ball last night. He is not going to be a permanent fixture in the Phils rotation at this point, he still needs some time to develop. The only reason he was called up was out of necessity and that need no longer exists.

J.A.'s in the minors and Eaton is now (thankfully) regulated to the bullpen:

*relegated

my bad dude i meant J.A. but if myers continues to struggle in the rotation they should put him in the 8th. inning as the set up man. And bring J.A. Happ back to majors how do u like that one DTRIK do u agree with that. Its just a opinion dude

Well do u trust Happ in the play offs seriusly.. and would you rather have a world series then a play off team that goes out into nothing ( like every philly team )

seriuslly screw havin a team in a few years from now.. I dont care about then, i care about now. When are we going to have a team this good again .. come on guys dont think about giving up future.. screw it .. im worried about the now

thats what i think its just this kid happ did very good when he was up at the majors shut the mets down to only 1 run idk
