John Maine
9-4 2.74 ERA 1.15 WHIP
John Smoltz
9-4 2.98 ERA 1.22 WHIP
John Smoltz has been there and has been around the game a very long time but it should be based on this year alone. Maine's numbers are clearly better, put the kid in the game over yesterday's news and take a look at the standings. Maine is a huge reason why the Mets are on top of the Braves.

Yep this alwayd happens. Look at the AL. Haren is 10-2 and has a much better ERA but he probably wont start. Its called Star Power I guess. Thats the only stat that really matters,
-
Yeah, it's inevitable really. But, at least the difference in their stats isn't huge...it's not like Maine is 12-2 and Smoltz is 8-5 or something like that. Sure, Smoltz has been there tons of times and Maine hasn't -- but also, don't rule out the possibility that Smoltz will want to rest for the 2nd half, and give his spot to someone else. Don't get me wrong, Maine has been tremendous, but I just think there have been much larger snubs in All-Star history.

Give me a break. Those stats are basically identical. And Smoltz has done it year in year out. Make Mayne prove that he can put up those numbers consistently. I say, good decision. The guy gave up back-to-back-to-back (the 3rd by the pitcher) against the Dodgers last month.

He had a bad game... Their stats are close, but with the same record, Maine has a better ERA and WHIP and his team is in first place.

Maine's stats are built on a foundation of cards. Check out his LOB% (82.5%), his OBAPIP (.253)...as those gravitate toward statistical norms, we'll see the real John Maine. 2007 John Maine = 1989 Jack Armstrong. The second half is not going to be pretty.

We'll have to see, but Maine didn't have a bad year last year... He coudln't throw his curveball his first start or two because he had something wrong with his finger and when he came back he was lights out. He had a 26 inning scoreless streak at one point. He'll have some bad starts here and there, but I don't think he'll completely fall off the map and become a mediocre pitcher.

You can't be an allstar when you give up bat-flipping homeruns to Hong Chih Kuo :)

Still A Chance For Maine
After reading David Lennon’s last post on his Newsday blog (On The Mets Beat), I realized that there is still a chance that John Maine could become an All-Star this year.Common sense would tell us that if even one starting pitcher backs out of the game, that Maine would have to be next in line. If not, then I would begin to get a little irritated on how much the pitchers are weighed...
Injury Bug Still Bites Mets
This is not good news for Mets fans. Perez and Sosa have had some big game performances this season and are part of the reason the Mets are in first place. If there are any positives to the situation, it's that both injuries are not considered serious (though hamstring and back injuries tend to have lingering effects), and the All-Star game is around the corner, so it's a...
HERE COME THE BRAVES!
It seems ''America's Team'' has got it together here lately winning four in a row in last night's drubbing of the Marlins. With June just about over, it seems like Bobby and the boys got their heads straight and are looking forward past the Break and looking ahead into the fall classic. It's been a long twelve years since our last taste of ''CHAMPAGNE...
Paul Lo Duca Mets Club House Cancer
Paul Lo Duca, the Mets catcher seems to have a problem with reporters only talking to him and not the "non-speaking" English players on the team. Is the Mets Catcher about to implode? It sure seems like it as he's starting to point fingers.
Paul Lo Duca "Upset" With Mets Latino Players
Paul Lo Duca seems to be very angry lately. He went apeshit on umpire Marvin Hudson arguing balls and strikes during Saturday's win over Oakland and was suspended two games for his actions. Following last nights rainout, Duke went off to the press about, of all things, the Latino ballplayers on the team and the New York press:
Admitting he was "in a bad mood all day,...
Lo Duca Out the Door?
Sources close to the Mets are saying they are in talks with the Pittsburgh Pirates regarding catcher Ronny Paulino. Whether this takes place before the July 31st trading deadline or in the offseason remains the question. Paulino is a young catcher who doesn't draw attention to himself, with his best playing days ahead of him; unlike the thirty-five year old Lo Duca.
