Oh how we forget.
For twelve years Sammy Sosa reigned over Chicago Cubs baseball, considered by some to be the rival to Ernie Banks in the discussions of the greatest baseball players to ever call Wrigley Field home. He crushed home runs, stole bases, batted in runs and served as one of the key drawing points for some otherwise depressing Cubs teams. Sammy was the star, Sammy was the draw, Sammy was the man on the North Side. People came to games and would leave happy even if the Cubs lost, just so long as they got to see Sammy go yard.
And then there was a fall from grace. It started with a sneeze that took him out of action for a while. A corked bat, a fastball to the head, a failed playoff run, and an early exit on the final game of the season added to an exit from Chicago, as the fans had turned on Sammy and his declining production. He was jeered in Baltimore, slumped and was soon left for dead. Cubs fans cheered his decline and steroid accusations came flying from parts of the North Side that had previously ignored such accusations. Sammy's fan base disappeared along with his production at the plate, and after a year away from the game it seemed as though we had seen the last of the slugger.
But this year Sammy decided to make a comeback, and the Rangers decided to give him a chance and so have I.

Of all Sammy may have done, he along with Big Mac saved baseball in their chase of Maris. I cant hate on him.

Should the Cubs Retire #21 and Other Off-Day Musings...
With the Cubs announcing that #31 will be retired in honor of Ferguson Jenkins and Greg Maddux, waxpaperbeercup recently asked if the Cubs should retire #21 in honor of Jason Marquis? All kidding aside, it's an intriguing question and I imagine...

Sammy Sosa Confirmed Awesome at Yet Another Thing
Over at THT, Rally, AKA Sean Smith, has published Part II of his historical Total Zone! ratings. (Part I is here.) I’m not even going to pretend to know enough to try and offer a criticism of the system, but Rally draws some interesting conclusions for the Cub fan, most notably that Sammy Sosa is the second-best defensive RF of all time:
Right field: Roberto Clemente leads...
Dawson vs. Sosa
One of the really cool things about Rally’s new Baseball Projection site is that he has Wins Above Replacement (WAR) for all players since 1955. Harry Pavlidis has gone over the Cubs at each position since ‘55 over on CubsF/X. He was nice enough to send me the data and the first thing I noticed was RF. We all know Sammy Sosa was good at baseball, but how good he was...
Beware, Brett: 10 Bad Un-retirement Decisions
If you're anything like us, you're sick of the way the media idolizes Brett Favre. They've treated him with kid gloves during infidelity, drug addiction, bad performance and the annual retirement circus. Let's just put it this way, if A-Rod was acting like Favre he would be drawn and quartered on live television. This unretirement situation is no different. Much of...
