Just when you thought the 2009 postseason umpiring couldn't get any worse, Tim McClelland goes ahead and makes what ends up as the worst call — or non-call — of all time. Yes, you read that right. The worst call of all time. Not just this postseason. Not this entire season. Not this decade. Not this century. I challenge you to think of one that was worse. At this point, not even Kanye West could interrupt to suggest something worse after McClelland left the entire baseball uni...

He definitely had a bad night, Cano and Posada were out at third, and Swisher did not leave third base too soon on the sac fly. The ump at second blew one also when Swisher was clearly tagged out on the pickoff. And I can say this even though 2 of those three calls went my teams way. What's wrong with these guys, they can't talk to each other and get it right?
  • The Umps have been terrible the entire playoffs. Lots of talk about instant replay but its not even difficult calls that they are missing that should require instant replay. It is just terrible umps. I see inconsistent strike zones, blown fair foul calls that are easy, terrible calls along the bases. Get new umps that don't suck if you don't want instant replay. Start umps in the minors when they are in their 20s. Then by the time they are 30 they will be both experienced and in good enough shape to be in the correct position to make the call. Get some young eyes!

yeah this was an easy call and he fudged it up. I know the Yankees pay good money to win, i didnt know they had Umps on the payroll as well. Baseball will never be huge again. free agency, no salary caps, steroids, the Yankees, and the umpires ruined this sport.... yuck
  • The Yankees are part of the problem? Are u serious?I'm guessing u are a Phillies fan and are just trying to set up excuses now for the WS. You still have a game to go and so do we.Lets's take care of those first then start your excuses. And for the record, the Yankees get screwed on calls all the time because they are the Yankees. It works both ways.Good luck in your series and we'll see you in the series!

Bronxeagle, it's no use trying to talk sense to Yankee Haters, they won't listen, there's nothing between their ears. The Yankees play within the rules of the game. Another thing these dimwits say is we buy championships. If that were true we would win the World Series every year, but we don't. So what does that say about that moronic opinion? Because of the collective bargaining agreement many of the smaller market teams get millions from the teams that have more money to spend, like the Yankees, Angels, Dodgers and Red Sox to name a few. One in particular, the Pirates screw their fans by not spending it on top notch talent, the cheap ownership pockets it. And the fans stand still for it. When they get good players through their farm systems they just trade them away, look at the Marlins over the years. The Yankees have been a winning organization since their inception and have always developed home grown talent. Hell the entire middle infield is home grown as well as Melky Cabrera and many of their pitching staff, Hughes and Chamberlain to name a couple. They have players who have worn the pinstripes who are among some of the greatest to ever play the game. You could start an entire Yankees wing in Cooperstown. WE OWE NOBODY AN APOLOGY!! I actually love when the haters start mouthing off, it's amusing. They root for a loser or a team that rarely wins and they don't know any other way to react except with hate, and I wouldn't want it any other way. GO YANKEES!!!! And to all the Yankee Haters....kiss my ass.

Jeter was actually safe at first on a play, but was called out.

If they are going to say that Aybar didn't touch the bag (which he didn't), then how can he say Cano was on the bag.

      Get some younger umpires!
  • All the controversial calls in the ALDS and ALCS have gone in the Yankees favor. But that is just a coincidence and the Yankees would have won anyway. They are a very good team I think that is obvious. The main point is the Umps are terrible and that needs to be fixed for the sake of the game. It looks like its going to be Phils vs Yanks which should be great for everyone that isnt pitching. Probably the two scariest line ups to face as a pitcher and they will be in two homer friendly ballparks. Can't wait for the series...go Phils!

Sorry, not ALL the calls went the Yankees way. Swisher did not leave the bag early and the ump said he did. McLelland wasn't even looking at Swisher's foot when the catch was made. That's umpiring 101.

McLelland didn't need to look at Swisher's foot. He made the call based on what his heart was telling him. What kind of logic is that when umping?

Ya that call goes down in my mind as the worst call ever.

Not to make fun of octagenarians, but why is it that there are a ton of old farts reffing and umpiring in the MLB NFL and NBA???

Age is a factor in my opinion. The proof is in the pudding.
    • I couldn't agree more I mentioned age earlier. Its just a fact that your eyesite and general shape gets worse with age. I want my umps running to the correct position to make these calls. I understand you want experienced umps but hire umps real young in the minors where the games don't matter. Then they will be able to make calls in the big leagues before they are dinosaurs. I love my grandpa but I don't want him making a call that decides the world series, nba championship, or super bowl.

Raz, age can be a factor to some extent, but that also means experience. That's why it's so alarming how bad some of the veteran umpires have been making calls. Many of the younger ones suck also and think the fans are coming to see them. If they are not going to expand instant replay, then the umps should be required to get together on controversial calls and get it right. They could afford a manager 2 challenges per game so it doesn't get out of hand and slow the game. Had the Yankees been able to challenge Swisher leaving third early that would have been over ruled. The play at second and the double play call at third would have been over ruled in the Angels favor. There is just too much money riding on these games to leave things to chance.
  • And would it hurt to keep track of the ones that blow calls and get rid of them? They showed clips of one of the umps blowing a call and said he got sent down to the minors. I'm fine with him working his way back up to major league but he should never be allowed to ump a playoff game again after being bumped down.

I agree with you completely razah, Age is a factor in my opinion.
