As the topic of performance-enhancing drugs in the world of sports has become increasingly prevalent, the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative (BALCO) investigation has become a story that refuses to go away. The lab, founded and formerly owned by Victor Conte, supplied PEDs, most notably tetrahydrogestrinone (THG) or as it became more commonly known as "the Clear", to trainers and athletes. BALCO has been in association with high profile athletes such as Bill Romanowski, Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery, as well as MLB players Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi, Gary Sheffield, Benito Santiago, Jeremy Giambi, Bobby Estalella, and Armando Rios.
The Biz of Baseball interviewed Conte today, in what will be surely one of the most expansive and provocative interviews yet published. The interview session today is one of two that will be published on BizofBaseball.com. Part I deals with Conte’s slide into the world of PEDs with chemist, Patrick Arnold; a highly critical look at the book Game of Shadows by Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada; as well as details on Troy Ellerman, the lawyer that eventually was revealed to be the source of leaks of BALCO grand jury testimony to Williams and Fainaru-Wada. Along the way, Conte and interviewer Maury Brown, discuss drug testing policies for professional sports leagues in the US, as well as discuss the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) testing program.
