Former Mets pitcher, Claudio Vargas, signed a one year deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the LA Times reports.

In 37 big league innings with the Mets last year, Vargas posted a 4.62 ERA and accumulated a mere 20 strike outs.

The Mets had hoped last year that Vargas would possibly be an answer to their pitching woes, especially after the season ending injury to Orlando Hernandez, however that never worked out.

This time around the Dodgers are hoping that Vargas can provide some stability at the end of their rotation.

The deal is a good one for the Dodgers as his base salary for next season is only $400K, and depending on his performance can increase to $1.8 Million.

Warming to the Idea of Jon Garland

Mets need pitching, and there just aren't a lot of options. If I were King, my priorities would be, in order:Oliver Perez: 4 years at $52MDerek Lowe: 3 years at $42MJon Garland: 3 years at $25M (incentives to $30M)Braden Looper: 2 years at $14MThat's my rack and stack and what I think would get the deals done. Unfortunately, there just aren't many quality FA starting...

Dodgers Sign Vargas

The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Dodgers have agreed to a one year, incentive laden deal with pitcher Claudio Vargas. Vargas, who went 3-2 with a 4.62 ERA last season, gives the Dodgers depth in their depleted rotation. The Dodgers are trying to add another veteran starter, but could pursue other guys like Vargas, perhaps Mark Mulder. The Dodgers might also go after Andy...

Mets Try To Catch Lightning In A Bottle Again

As you all know by now... BREAKING NEWS: Mets offer Lowe 3-Year Deal How dramatic indeed... While I'm glad that the Mets finally extended an offer to Derek Lowe, who I really believe is the best available remaining free agent pitcher, I am bothered by the fact that they low-balled him. Much has been made of the fact that Lowe was seeking a 5-year, $90 million dollar contract...

More then Manny, the other Free Agent Outfielders

Manny Ramirez may be the most accomplished of the free agent outfielders but theres a handful of others who will do more then their share of hacking this coming season. Ramirez seems destined to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers one way or the other. While the two sides can’t agree on the length of a [...]

J.J. Putz - Ready, Willing and Able

Last week, J.J. Putz had some interesting things to say about his new role with the New York Mets. Obviously, his first choice would have been to close, but he has completely embraced his future role as the setup man for the Mets. "It wasn't the ideal situation. I really loved closing. But I'm just going to take it an inning earlier, so it's not going to be that...

Dodgers Pursuing Garland, Wolf

According to Dodgers.com, Dodgers GM Ned Colletti would like to add a veteran starter and has targeted Jon Garland and Randy Wolf. On paper, the Dodgers have a lot of starters: Billingsley, Kuroda, Kershaw, Schmidt, Stults, and McDonald. However, Billingsley has a broken leg, Kuroda has tendonitis in his right shoulder, and Schmidt has only made six starts in the last two seasons...

Mets Need Another Lefty In the Bullpen

The additions of J.J. Putz and Francisco Rodriguez, along with the subtractions of Scott Schoeneweis and Aaron Heilman completely reconstructed the shape of the 2009 Mets bullpen. The 1-2 punch of Putz and K-Rod should be a major strength in late innings, but one weakness that has been largely ignored is the lack of lefties in the bullpen. Reading articles on Mets.com (Mlb.com writer...

I’m Guessing This Jersey Cost $2.25 And Was Bought At A Place With The Word ‘Mart’ In The Title

This is eerily similar to the Mets jersey my dad used to wear when he took me to games in the 80s, except the name on top was ?Ball? along with the number 8. Via Joe Sports Fan.

Lowe situation makes me nerves....

I've believed that Derek Lowe was the perfect fit for this team since he was pitching in the playoffs for the Dodgers. So for the Mets to be in actual contract discussions with Lowe, of course the neurotic Mets fan is going to come out and believe at any moment, just when everything appears to ...

Rumor Mill: 12/30

There?s pretty much nothing to the Andruw Jones to the Mets rumors. It would be a ?complete shock? if anything happened Despite it appearing to be as perfect a fit there is to have Manny Ramirez roaming left field, a source with knowledge of the Mets thinking still says the Wilpon?s will ...

Time to Get a Lowe Deal Done

Happy New Year, everyone. Let's hope this is our year, Mets With the bullpen picture much clearer with Francisco Rodriguez and J.J. Putz holding down the back end, it seems like we're within days of settling the rotation Apparently Derek Lowe has (not surprisingly) turned ...

Rock the Vote.....Manny

The good Mets fans at NYFS have decided to start a petition to show how many Mets fans want Manny Ramirez. We need a left fielder and a right handed bat, so from a baseball point of view Manny makes sense. In fact Omar has been known to covet Ramirez and even this year his tepid responses can't ...

I'll keep shopping....Lowe

The day started with people close to Derek Lowe saying the pitcher believed he would be a Met and by the end of the day there are reports out of Boston that he's disatissfied with the Mets offer and will cont. to shop for a better deal. Of course, you have to consider the source the Boston ...

Not a Petty Problem

Well, 2009 is here, and the Yankees still have a few questions they need to answer--even if they did the impossible and signed Sabathia, Teixiera and Burnett. The biggest question, perhaps, is what to do with Andy Pettitte. If the season were to start tomorrow the Yankees' starting rotation would be:CC ...

SNY Doesn’t Fail to Disappoint

I decided to spend my New Years Eve morning doing the little stuff around the house: laundry, residual clean up after Christmas, playing with my dog in the snow. After a couple of hours of this, I decided to make some waffles and watch TV. I did my usual channel surfing to see if there [...]
