With the injury to Mets starter Orlando Hernandez looking worse and worse everyday, Metsblog.com is reporting that the Mets are on the brink of signing free agent pitcher Claudio Vargas. Vargas went 11-6 with a 5.09 ERA for the Brewers last season. After last night's pitching performance by Mike Pelfrey against the hated Phillies, the Mets may feel a little more comfortable with the idea of having Pelfrey and Vargas as their 4th and 5th starters until Pedro Martinez returns. As the old adage says: You can never have enough pitching. The Mets are beginning to heed that message.

Mets expected to sign Vargas

The New York Mets look like they may have begun to address the injury problems that are already striking their starting rotation. The team is on the verge of signing free-agent Claudio Vargas to a AAA minor league deal. According to Vargas agent, Bean Stringfellow, there were four teams showing interest in him and that the Mets are the favorite. I'm not sure how believable that...

WEEKLY WILLIE RANDOLPH WATCH LIST

I am not saying the Mets need to fire Willie Randolph if they lose the next two games to the Phillies, but I just feel like I'm watching the same bad movie, night in and night out, and Willie's lack of change is something that needs to be monitored.

Met Fans Rick Roll their own team…sorta

So, a couple of creative New York Met fans got over 5 MILLION, yes, I said MILLION people to vote for Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" as the official 8th inning sing-a-long for every home game. Sadly, a few Mets representatives know the whole story, and know the majority of those 5 million votes did not come from Met fans. However, they haven't nixed...

XOXOs of the Day

Well after 3 losses, the Mets finally mustered a win. I'm glad Mike Pelfrey got the W today, even though it was far from ace-like. I'll take a stopper in any way, shape, or form. In all seriousness though, I want Pelf to do well. I want him to seize his opportunities and show some guts. So hats off to him. Pelfrey seems like the obvious XOXO winner, but not today. ...

You make the call: Reyes out at home?

Watch the replay below of the supposed game-winning run scored by Jose Reyes. Did Chris Coste tag him before he touched the plate? Looking at the slow motion replay in the clip, I think it's close, but I really don't see Reyes touching the plate at all.

Jose Reyes leaves game

Jose Reyes has left the game in the bottom of the 5th inning against the Brewers.

Luis Castillo, El Duque, and Angel Pagan updates

Luis Castillo is day to day, El Duque has been shut down with a tendon strain, and Angel Pagan is batting second in the order.

Last Opening Day at Shea: The Treasures We'll So Dearly Miss

On April 17, 1964 New York baseball returned to a new home in Queens. And, for 45 or so years since, millions have suffered the pain of cheering on the blue-and-orange. Despite it all, though, there has always been one constant source of comfort for Mets fans. One shining beacon of beauty in an otherwise bleak and dark Flushing backdrop: Shea Stadium.

Mets stomp error-prone Phillies

So much for the Phillies owning the Mets. The Mets took advantage of 4 errors and a poor start by Kyle Kendrick to win 8-2 and snap the Phillies' nine game winning streak over New York. The Phils played without Jimmy Rollins, who sat out with a minor ankle injury, and his replacement Eric Bruntlett made two costly errors in the 3rd inning that led to a 6-run outburst by the Mets...

Appreciating Greatness

Every year when the Brewers schedule comes out I always look to see when the Cincinnati Reds come to town. I can almost be guaranteed to see exciting ball games but more importantly I get a chance to see one of the greatest players of all-time: Ken Griffey Jr. I know fan protocol says you cheer your heart out for your team and boo the opposition unmercifully. I've never been...

Shea & Yankee Stadium: The Lasting Memories

In honor of both New York baseball parks bidding us farewell at the end of the season, the Post has begun compiling a list of the 25 greatest moments at Shea and Yankee Stadium with the expectation they'll be covering trivial, yawn inducing moments such as the Boone home run, Clemens attacking Piazza with a bat shard and Bill Buckner's legs. That leaves it up to us to...
